    Helical gears have teeth that are angled forming a helix rather than parallel to the axis of rotation. They run smoother than other gears and can transmit power between parallel or perpendicular shafts. Proper meshing requires the gears to have equal but opposite helix angles. Helical gear kinematics are similar to spur gears but account for the helix angle which is the angle of tooth inclination. Geometric properties like normal circular pitch, normal diametral pitch, and normal module are defined based on viewing the gear teeth from a cross-section perpendicular to the axis.
