Jack Merridew
Who really is Jack Merridew?
Jack is directly introduced and described as Inside the floating
cloak he was tall, thin, and bony; and his hair was red beneath
the black cap. His face was crumpled and freckled, and ugly
without silliness. Out of this face stared two light blue eyes,
frustrated now, and turning, or ready to turn, to anger. (Golding
20).

Youre talking too much, said Jack Merridew. Shut up, Fatty.
(Golding 21).

Why should I be Jack? Im Merridew. (Golding 21).

I ought to be chief, said Jack with simple arrogance, because

Im chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp. (Golding
22).

Jack has an id personality, later showing how he will result to

terrible actions in order to get what he wants.

Choir leader who becomes the hunter leader.

Jacks Significance
Jacks significance in the group is that he is the hunter who will stop at nothing to hunt or kill an animal.
He likes hunting so much he doesnt care about anything important.

I was going to I was choosing a place Next time (Golding 31). This line is referring to when jack
let the pig get away and shows how he is committed to killing it next time he sees it.

You let the fire go out. Jack checked vaguely irritated by his irrelevance but too happy to let it worry
him (Golding 69). This shows Jack was too busy hunting that he didnt care about anything else
Pig or Rescue?
A symbol which connects to Jack is a pig. He is always on the lookout to hunt more of them and
loses track of the actual goal of being rescued.

they heard the noises--sqeakings--and the hard strike of hoofs, (Golding 31). This represents
Jacks first encounter with a pig on the island.

Next time there would be no mercy. (Golding 31).

Dont you want to be rescued? All you can talk about is pig, pig, pig! (Golding 54).

You let the fire go out. (Golding 69).

You and your hunting! We might have gone home--(Golding 70).

Scar vs. Jack
~Jack represents evil and the dark side of human nature, this is similar to someone else you may of heard of.
~Scar from The Lion King had some of the same traits as Jack and they strive to be in control.
~[Jack] began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling.(Golding 33)
~this quote shows that Jack was becoming savage and losing control, this is something scar also does when he
becomes jealous of his older brother.
~They both have someone they are trying to prove themselves to and they want to be better than everyone
~ Kill the pig, cut her throat, spill the blood (Golding 69)
~This is what Jack had the other boys chanting, which shows that he starts to have control over them, just like
Scar had control over the hyenas.
~They both would kill to be in a position
Of power.
