Voltaic Cell
Voltaic cell is kind of electrochemical cell
which can produce electric energy from
spontaneous redox reaction. In a voltaic cell,
anode is negative terminal and cathode is
positive terminal. Anode and cathode metals are
immersed into an electrolyte solution which
contains metal ions. Both solutions are connected
by wire. The electrical product is measured by a
voltmeter which is installed on the wire. The salt
bridge contains salt in gelatin which functions to
keep the electricity from both solution neutral so
that there will not be any disconnection of the
electrical current.
Voltaic Cell

Each electrode undergoes half cell reaction. Anode

undergoes oxidation reaction, whereas cathode
undergoes reduction reaction. Electrons produced
from the oxidation reaction flow through the wire
to the electrolyte solution with its cathode. Then,
electrons are used to get reduction reaction to
form metal. The electrical current through the wire
is the one produces sources of electrical energy.
The naming of chemical reaction in voltaic cells uses
cell diagram.
Anode | Solution || Solution | Cathode
Example : Zn | Zn2+ || Cu2+ | Cu

We can calculate cell potential by knowing the

reduction potential value for each substance which
undergoes redox reaction.
