EVALUATION QUESTION How effective is the

TWO texts?
THE DIGI PACK A TRAILER,
A MAGAZINE COVER AND A
FILM
Within my A2 POSTER
media course work I have finalised and made the following, a
trailer and to accompany this media production I have made a film poster
and a magazine cover; all of these are in aid of each other to promote your
main product. In my case, this is the film Laurie. Maximum promotion
needs to be entailed within my products, this is apparent as I am not a
large conglomerate but instead, I would be an independent company;
meaning I would have a minimal budget for distribution, production and
promotion. With this in mind, I would need to think of the best methods to
get the word around about my film. Due to the type of my film, near to all
handheld shooting apart from extreme close ups of my antagonist to aid
with story line, I would save money regarding the production stage of my
film meaning I can use the remainder on distribution and promotion.

Furthermore, as I used amateur actors as well instead of capital
names this would deem hard to gain a more universal target
audience as they would be unrecognisable names; therefore
members would not come see the film just for seeing their
favourite actors. For example, the independent company Black
Bear Pictures had a small budget of $14,0000 and used their
money to hire renowned actors such as Benedict Cumberbatch as
a method of attraction for their audience due to people having seen
him within his previous works and it would entice the audience to
come see The Imitation Game. Ergo, most of my budget shall be
projected across the promotional methods of my film such as the
film poster and progressing the title and details within a prominent
magazine; thus having a magazine cover relevant to the filming.

SYNERGY TO PROMOTE
RECOGNITION ACROSS ALL
METHODS OF PROMOTION
I have decided to use synergy to allow my audience members
to become aware and recognise my film across all the media
products I have used to promote my film. For example, in my
trailer I have abided the conventions of the horror genre by
having typical horror iconography, such as the colour schemes
and font to be representative of this genre. Ergo, I have used
the same iconography across all of my media products to
utilise ultimate recognition to my audience meaning I would
form a hype for my film; making people excited and waiting to
come see it.
SYNERGY IN COLOUR
SCHEMES
In all of my media productions I have used a red or black font due to the underlying
connotations and associations with the term horror.
Red has multiple connotations within different genres and hybrid genres. For example, in a
romance film it can connote lust and love. It may also be used to sexualise a female member,
especially in terms of Laura Mulveys male gaze theory; this is evident in films such as Some
Like It Hot which stars Marilyn Monroe as Sugar a character who has been thrusted with the
male gaze regarding the use of extreme close ups to accentuate her lips as well as presenting
her as an object just to be admired by men.
Contradicting this, red on womens lips can also assert power and dominance. For example,
Angelina Jolie in Maleficent is not sexualised at all and her red lip and consistent pout is just a
method to allow audience to see her power and authority against the other members within the
film.
In thriller films it represents danger and informs the actors that they should be cautious
regarding their next moves within the film
This can be conveyed also in horror films regarding the danger connotations. Red is also
symbolic of blood and destruction; thus illustrating throughout what is usually depicted in
horror films.
EXAMPLES WITHIN MY
PRODUCTSThis image is layered with
multiple effects so it didnt look
so neutral an represent the
ideas of an equilibrium. By
manipulating this image I have
allowed a more terrifying
element; this isnt directly
connoted to red but around the
eyes there is a likeliness to a
lighter pinky red.

The layered background has

multiple colour schemes to
conform to the connotations
which I want to uphold. The
red layering example's this.
FURTHER USE OF SYNERGY

Further use of synergy can be seen within the connotations of

black.
Across all genres, black usually possesses negative connotations.
For example, when presented in a media platform or in multiple
other platforms the audience or readers will typically infer themes
such as death, mystery, authority, destruction and fear. All of these
emotions and motifs are relevant and substantial in the conventions
of a horror genre film. By using black symbolises to the audience
the type of film that I am producing thus formulating a main target
audience when used within my media products. The primary target
audience would be members who enjoy being thrilled by horror
genres.

this a significant prop later on as
well exemplifies the connotations
and emphases them thoroughly.
FURTHER USE OF THE BLACK
COLOUR SCHEME WITHIN
MY PRODUCTS
USING WHITE IN A PIECE OF
MEDIA
Another colour which I have used within my media
products is white. In this sense I have challenged the
typical connotations of purity, innocence and cleanliness. I
have typically used it to make the typography stand out
against a black background and to give information
regarding the film, as it is shown in the opening credits of
my trailer; making it a very neutral colour.
This method has been used across a lot of horror trailers to
challenge the initial connotations of white; usually just on
black backgrounds to emphasise the titles being shown.
We can evidently see this is the trailer for The Crucifixion
and the trailer for The Conjuring Three.

EXAMPLES WITHIN MY
PRODUCTS

Shown within my examples of my media products, I have used the
same colour scheme across my media products to encourage
synergy. The colour scheme has been used to establish a clear link
between the three products which is a device to heighten the
recognisability of the film Laurie. For the audience to be able to
recognise the film from the three products enables and emphasises
promotion method making it an efficient promotional tool.
Furthermore, due to the connotations of the colour schemes which I
have used depicts a particular type of audience, setting an
acquired target audience, as it allows the audience to infer what
genre of film it is going to be.
SYNERGY THROUGH THE
USE OF IMAGE
Repetition of imagery across all of your media products aids the
ideas of recognition across media products creating a definite link
between them which ultimate benefits and promotes each other. As
I have used the same images in my magazine cover as well as my
trailer emphasises that these are intertwined within each other. For
example, the main dominant image used on the magazine cover is
a photo of the setting I have used within my film. Wraith Woods is
an emphasised element regarding the film as it is where the dis-
equilibrium occurs. The mise en scene of this locations matches the
conventions within a horror genre film as it depicts an isolated,
rural setting ideal inevitable disaster to happen. Again, through the
use of synergy it attaches the film to a specific group of people who
would enjoy the film due to the themes and action regarding the
thrilling experience as well as the ambiguity of the story line;
making them the set target audience.
EXAMPLES OF SYNERGY
WITHIN REPETITION OF
IMAGERY
As seen in the background of
the magazine title, I have used
a canted image of the woods to
establish the setting. Through
the use of this image I have set
the type of film through the
connotations of an isolated
woods. To illustrate the
conventions and connotations
of this genre further I have
edited and layered the image
to darken it and added
different effects such as
feathered to make it appear
distorted and disorientating
The same image has also
been used in the ending
sequence of my film. By
using the same image within
my media products presents
itself as a promotional tool to
aid ultimate promotion of my
film.
SYNERGY USED IN
TYPOGRAPHY ACROSS MY
MEDIA PRODUCTS
Typography is another element I have used to connect the three
media productions together. The films title Laurie, the same font
has been used across all three of my digi-pack. This is a device to
establish a clear relationship between the three and therefore
accentuating ultimate advertising of each other.
To abide the conventions of my film poster and a magazine cover I
needed to use multiple typography which further presents the key
themes in a magazine and a film poster. Neutral fonts can be
exposed on these media productions to give the reader information
and detail about the magazine and the film. It may not have any
direct connotations to horror but it conveys what media form it is
through the type of font.
EXAMPLES OF TYPOGRAPHY
IN MY PRODUCTIONS
WHY?
By using synergy as promotional tool it has allowed me to establish
a clear link between my media product of a trailer and my
ancillaries. Using synergy in this matter, I also needed to convey
the conventions of the genre and by doing so I have enabled my
target audience through my promotion. By using font, colour
schemes and symbolism which all connotes to horror, when seen
by members of the public they can infer these themes and
therefore know whether or not they will enjoy this film. Making my
main target audience people who enjoy horror films.
SUCCESSFUL?
Overall, I believe that using these three to promote the film has
been very successful. I have kept to the key conventions of both
genre and form as well manipulating these features to create a
recognisable link between the three products. The use of repetition
regarding imagery, typography and colour emphasises the key
themes of Laurie efficiently and thus promoting who would want
to come see the film depicting a concrete target audience. The
imagery shown in these promotional aids are also quite mature and
established how I have set the BBFC rating as 15; thus these darker
themes presented within my media products establish how it is not
for a young audience.
