Introduction
O The Netherlands is a country in the
west of Europe.
O Its capital city is Amsterdam
O Its currency is Euro
O It has been part of the European
Union since 1957
O The main spoken language is Dutch
Location and size
O It is 41,540 km2 in size, half the size
of Ireland (84,421 km2)
O Its population is 16.8 million, four
times Irelands population, which is
4.7 million

O The King of The
Netherlands is
Willem-Alexander
and has been king
since 30th April 2013
O They also have a
government and
were voted 10th most
democratic country
in the world in 2010
by The Economist.
Climate
O The climate in the Netherlands is similar to
the climate we have in Ireland.
O The summers are warm and the winters are
cool. However, the summers become
warmer than here.
O The average temperature in the summer
months is 22 C and in winter months 1 C.
O This means that there are many sunny days
in the summer and some snowy days in
winter.
Education
1. Primary School
O.Primary school in the Netherlands is
known as Basisschool, which means
basic school.
O.Children usually being Basisschool at
the age of four, for what is known as
group 1, however it is only
compulsory from group 2
O.Basisschool lasts for 8 years, so
students are 12 when they leave.

O There are 3 types of secondary
schools in The Netherlands:
VMBO (voorbereidend middelbaar
beroepsonderwijs)
HAVO (hoger algemeen voortgezet
onderwijs)
VWO (voorbereidend
wetenschappelijk onderwijs)

The Dutch Football
Team
O The Dutch Football team have been
relatively successful in the past 50 years.
O They have qualified for the World Cup 10
times, the first being in 1934.
O They have never won but have been
runners up in 1974, 1978 and 2010.
O They have qualified for the European
Championship 9 times, the first being
1976.
O They won the Euros once, in 1988

O However, in recent years, they
havent been as good as they used
to be.
O They didnt qualify for the 2016
Euros
O They are only ranked 14th in the
World Ranking.
O Some famous players include Robin
Van Persie and Arjen Robben
The Netherlands in the
EU
O The Netherlands was part of the
group of countries who founded the
EEC in 1957.
O The other countries included
Germany, France, Belgium, Italy and
Luxembourg.
O Today it has 25 representatives in
the European Parliament.
O The European Commissioner for the
Netehrladns is Frans Timmermans.
Dutch
O Dutch is a West Geramanic language
spoken by 23 million people,
including the population of the
Netherlands and about 60% of the
Belgium population.
O It is the third most spoken Germanic
language, after English and German.
