Blending for

Kindergarten
HAILEY WALTMAN
Objectives, and How it fits with
Common Core
Objectives: Students will use their left arm and right hand, to
involve kinesthetic learning, and learn to correctly blend
several, one syllable words.

Standards Taken From The Common Core:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.B
Count, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.C
Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken
words.
Blending: Starting Out
We are going to start
out blending the
word MAD. First, take
your right arm and
raise it up, and then
take your left hand
and place it on your
right shoulder. Sound
out the first part of
the word, Mmm.
Blending: The Middle

Next, put your right hand on the inside of your

left elbow, and sound out the middle of the
word.
Sound out the letter Aaa.
Blending: The Ending

Next, place your left

hand on your right hand,
and sound out the last
sound; Dd.
Blending: Now Put It All Together!

Lastly, Start your right hand on your shoulder, and begin by

sounding out the first part of the word (Mmm), then slide down
your arm to the next sound (Aaa), then lastly slide down to your
hand and say (Dd).
Start at your shoulder once more, and put it all together as you
slide down your arm. (Mm-Aa-Dd).
Then say it once more altogether: Mad.
What Did We Do?

We just sounded out the word Mad, by

involving the children's kinesthetic learning
ability. We used our arms and hands as
motions, to know how to properly blend, and
sound out, one syllable words.
Test Time!

Now I want you all to use the technique we just

learned, and sound out (in your head) the sounds I
give you. Then blend the sounds together, to figure
out the word.
First word: Mm-Aa-SH
Second word: L-OO-K
Third word: G-OO-Se
Fourth word: M-OO-Se
Fifth word: Mm-Aa-Tt
Computer Fun
Once you have finished the problems I gave
you, please find a computer, and I will get you
started on the PBS website, where you will
blend words with the "Between the Lions"
Characters.
