Birth to Second Grade Teachers
What will you need?
Pass the following tests
Praxis Core Academics Skills for Educators
Praxis Content Area Test
Have a Bachelors degree or have graduated from an accredited college or University
Completed 3 semester hours of credit in a course of study regarding parental involvement
and family engagement
Completed at least 6 semester hours of courses in early childhood education consisting of
courses in any of the following subjects:
Early childhood curriculum, Emergent language and literacy, Play theory and creativity
Completed at least 35 semester hours of courses in early childhood education for children
who are developing typically and atypically.
Elementary Subjects K-8
Teachers
What will you need?
Pass the following tests

Praxis Content Area Test
Hold a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university
Have completed a program of preparation for teaching in the elementary grades which is
approved by the Board
Have completed 32 semester hours of credit in courses in elementary professional
education
18 semester hours of credit
6 semester hours of Math, 6 semester hours of Science, 6 semester hours of Social Studies
Endorsements may be added to this license from the following areas:
Computers and technology relating to the use of computers, English, Health, Mathematics, Literacy,
Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Bilingual Education
Substitute Teacher
What will you need?
Be a citizen of the United States or be a lawful resident of the United States
Have earned a minimum of 60 semester credits or have earned an associates degree or
higher from a regionally accredited university
Have that be reflected on an official transcript
Special Education (Exceptional
Students) Teacher
Gifted and Talented Education Teachers only
What will you need?
Hold a license for the level of education in which the program is offered
Have 2 years of verified experience as a teacher in schools approved by the department
Have completed 12 semester hours of credit from an accredited college or university these
courses of study include:
. Characteristics and needs of gifted and talented pupils, Assessment of gifted and talented pupils
and programs for such pupils, Curriculum in content areas for gifted and talented pupils and
Methodology and strategies for teaching gifted and talented pupils.
Reading Specialist
What will you need?
Hold a bachelors degree
Hold a valid elementary, middle school or junior high, secondary or special teaching license,
(This excludes Business and Industry)
Have completed at least 16 semester credits in reading including the following:
Foundations of Reading, Elementary Methods and Materials, Secondary Methods and Materials,
Diagnosis of reading disabilities and A practicum in reading remediation.
Art Specialist
What will you need?
Pass the following tests
Praxis Core Academics Skills for Educators
Principles of Learning and Teaching K-6 or 7-12
Praxis Content Area Test
Hold a Bachelor's degree
Have competed 3 semester credits in a course regarding parental involvement and family
engagement
Have completed
22 semester credits of professional education including:
Have completed
History of art, Design, Drawing, Painting, Digital or graphic arts, Ceramics or sculpture; and
Photography or printmaking
Library/ Media Specialist
What will you need?
Have a valid elementary, middle school or junior high school, secondary or special teaching
license, (excluding a business and industry license)
Have completed a program for school library media specialists which has been approved by
the Board or a regional accrediting association
Hold a masters or more advanced degree in library science, with specialization in school
librarianship, from a school accredited by the American Library Association
Have completed 21 semester credits to include coursework in each of following subjects:
Organization and administration of a school library, The cataloging and classification of materials for
a library, Reference, bibliography and information skills, The use and selection of educational media
for a library, Childrens and young adults literature, Computers in the library, A supervised
practicum in an elementary, middle or junior high school, or a secondary school library
Physical Education Specialist
What will you need?
Pass the following tests
Praxis Core Academics Skills for Educators
Praxis Content Area Test
Hold a Bachelors degree
Have completed 3 semester credits in a course of study regarding parental involvement and
family engagement
Have completed an approved program of preparation for teaching physical education in K- 12
Have completed 42 semester credits in Physical courses (included are a few of these courses)
Anatomical Kinesiology or Mechanical Kinesiology, or both, The Physiology of Exercise, Testing and
measuring the skill and ability of a pupil in physical education, The psychological or social aspects of
physical education, or both, Motor learning or motor development, Adapted physical education
Complete 22 semester credits in professional education
Music Specialist
What will you need?
Pass the following tests
Praxis Core Academics Skills for Educators
Principles of Learning and Teaching K-6 or 7-12
Praxis Content Area Test
Hold a Bachelor's degree
Have completed 3 semester credits in a course of study regarding parental involvement and
family engagement
Have completed a program for teaching music approved by the Board
Have completed 22 semester credits of professional education
Have completed 36 semester credits in the foundations of music including:
Music Theory, The History or Literature of Music, Applied Music, including an area of specialization in
Vocal or Instrumental Music, Conducting, Techniques for Brass, Woodwind, Percussion, Piano and
String Instruments, Diction or Vocal Techniques and Pedagogy; and Music Ensemble.
Educational Computer Strategist
(Computer Applications)
What will you need?
Hold an elementary, middle school/junior high, secondary or special license
A program which has been approved by the Board for teaching computer-based
applications
Have completed 12 semester credits that include:
Educational issues relating to computers
Methods for teaching computer applications or instruction in at least 3 of the following application
packages
Productivity tools such as word processing, databases and spreadsheets, Communication tools,
Research tools, Multimedia tools; or any Other applications approved by the Board
Methods for teaching the integration of technology with curriculum
School Counselor
What will you need?
Pass the following tests
Praxis Core Academics Skills for Educators
Praxis Content Area Test
Complete 3 semester credits in a course of study regarding parental involvement and
family engagement
Must hold a masters or more advanced degree in school counseling
Must hold a specialty credential as a National Certified School Counselor issued by the
National Board for Certified Counselors
Must hold a masters or more advanced degree with a major in counseling
Along with 2 years teaching experience, and 2 years school counseling experience
Must have completed 600 hours of a school counseling practicum, internship or field
experience in grades K-12
School Psychologist
What will you need?
Hold a certificate as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist issued by the National School
Psychology Certification System of the National Association of School Psychologists
Complete 3 semester credits in a course of study regarding parental involvement and family
engagement
Hold a graduate degree with preparation in school psychology
Have completed 60 semester graduate credits in the following courses:
In the area of psychology and education of the normal child:
Child development, Child and adolescent psychology and Theories of learning, In the area of psychology
In the area of psychology and education of the child with disabilities:
Abnormal psychology and The emotionally disturbed or behaviorally disordered child
In the area of techniques of intervention:
A practicum on individual counseling and The process of counseling
Have completed practicum and a minimum of a 1000 hour internship in school psychology
School Administrator
What will you need?
Hold a valid elementary, middle school/ junior high, secondary or special teaching license
Hold a masters degree
Have completed 3 years of teaching experience in accredited K-12 schools
Have completed at least 24 semester hours of graduate courses in the administration of a
school these include:
Administration and organization of a school, Supervision of instruction, Development of personnel,
Finances of a school, The laws that apply to schools, Curriculum, Educational research, Internship or
field experience in school administration, Other courses considered to be part of an administrative
program for educators
Have completed an additional 12 semester hours of graduate courses which may include
other courses considered to be part of an administrative program for educators
