Background and Early Life

Born in Boston in 1950

Irish Catholic family

Hitch-hiked across the country, and eventually

spent a year in the Merchant Marine.

Enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1970

Got a Masters degree in National Security Studies

from Georgetown in 1984.
John Kelly, Secretary - Career

After his Masters degree, he commanded a weapons company.

He then served as a battalion operations officer after being
promoted to major in 1987.

He then taught at the Basic School in Quantico.

He then commanded a division until 1994-1995, when he served

as the Commandants Liaison Officer to the United States
House of Representatives.

He participated in the Iraqi invasion as commander of Task Force

Tripoli.

Served as senior assistant to the Secretary of Defense in 2011.

John Kelly, Secretary - Southern
Commander

Purpose of the command is to administer military operations in

Central and Latin America, along with defending the Panama
Canal.
The Budget

Homeland Security has an annual budget of about $41.2

Billion in 2016.
The entire department has 240,000 current employees.

There are 2 agencies under Homeland Security, such as TSA,

United States Coast Guard, United States Secret Service, FEMA,
CBP and more.

The top 3 spenders in 2016 were FEMA (Federal Emergency
Management Agency) at 22%, CBP (Customs and Border
Protection) at 21%, and the USCG (United States Coast Guard) at
15%.
Transportation Security Administration

The TSA has an annual budget of $7.55 Billion.

It was established on November 19, 2001 after the 9/11 strikes, to

ensure safety so another terrorist attack cannot occur again.

When established on November 19, 2001 it was first in the
Department of Aviation and Transportation under the order of the
Aviation and Transportation Act, but then moved to the
Department of Homeland Security in March 2003, which was
created the prior November.

The TSA has around 55,600 employees securing our nations safety
in transportation. Its executive director is Peter V. Neffenger.

The TSA ensures safety in transportation as well as possible and

prevents future attacks involving airlines
United States Coast Guard

Began on August 4, 1790 by George Washington to prevent

smuggling into the United States.

It was originally part of the Department of the Treasury, then

moved to the Department of Transportation in 1967, and on
February 2003, it became part of the Department of Homeland
Security.
United States Coast Guard

Commander is Admiral Paul F. Zunuft.

The USCG has an annual budget of around $11 Billion and has
40,000 people in active duty.

On an average day, the coast guard conducts 45 search and rescue

missions, saves ten lives, saves over $1.2 million in property,
seizes 874 pounds of cocaine and 214 pounds of marijuana,
conducts 24 security boardings in and around US border, and
very much more.

United States Secret Service

Annual budget of $2.8 billion. It was formed on July 5, 1865 in

Washington D.C. to suppress counterfeit currency.

Director is Joseph Clancy

The agency was asked to begin its protective mission after the
assassination of President William Mckinley (1901).

On March 1st, 2003, the USSS was transferred from the

Department of the Treasury to the Department of Homeland
Security.
United States Secret Service

Today, the USSS provides physical protection to the nations

highest elected leaders.
