THE TAIPING REBELLION

INTRODUCTION

The Taiping Rebellion happened in December 1850 August


1864
During this rebellion, China was ruled by the Qing Dynasty,
which was neo confucian and rejected superstitous and
mystical elements of Taoism and Buddhism that had influenced
Confucianism during and after the Han Dynasty.
Neo-Confucianists used metaphysics as a guide for developing
a rationalist ethical philosophy
CAUSES

The Qing Dynasty was on decline because of a rise in


population, leading peasants to grow poorer and causing
rebellions to break out.
The Rebellion began under the leadership of Hong Xiuquan
who announced that he had received visions and learned that
he was the younger brother of Jesus and chosen by God to
create a heavenly kingdom and corrupt the Qing Dynasty.
EVENTS

Hong Xuiquan from south China, had failed the imperial


examinations four times, and decided to give up. During that
time he had visions that he later interpreted to be a message
from god. Hong had been preached to by christian followers
and had been learning about christianity. Hong by 1850, had
collected around 20,000 followers he called the "Heavenly
Kingdom". They would go around and preach, and anyone who
didn't agree with them would be killed.
OUTCOMES

Over 20million deaths occurred, most being civilian


There was increased foreign influence and loss of Chinese
territory to Japan during these times
