Bread and pastries packaging made from bread waste

OBJECTIVE: To obtain a 100% PLA


biodegradable thermoplastic film for bread and

Biodegradable and active packaging for prepared fruit and vegetables

OBJECTIVE: Development of an active biodegradable


packaging for fresh-cut fruit and vegetables,
manufactured with thermoplastics obtained from
renewable sources (PLA-polylactic acid) functionalized
with natural additives that give it antioxidant,
antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Biodegradable packaging for juices with antioxidant
properties, elaborated with sugars present in waste water

OBJECTIVE: To add value to the waste from the juice


industry benefitting from the sugars and other waste
that is rich in carbon, nitrogen and oxygen present in
the waste water from this industry to elaborate new
juice packaging, biodegradable and with antioxidant
properties.

OBJECTIVE: New technology based on co-injection


reducing in half the processes necessary to
manufacture the packaging, reducing thus the price.

Biodegradable solutions for packaging of liquid dairy
products

OBJECTIVE: Creating multilayer plastic bottles, as well


as bags to package liquid dairy products which are not
required to be separated of the rest of the organic
wastes at the end of their brief lifespan.

Transparent and high barrier biodegradable film and
sheet for customized modified atmosphere food
packaging
OBJECTIVE: Developing an innovative fully biodegradable
and recyclable, multilayer, barrier and transparent
structure for fresh pasta and different types of cheese that
requires customized Modified Atmosphere Packaging
(MAP). At least polylactic acid (PLA) and polyvinyl alcohol
(PVOH) will be combined. A biodegradable coating based
on natural waxes will cover the outer layer to increase the
package barrier against water vapour.

Reduction of CO2 emissions by the PHB use obtained from whey:


demonstration in dairy products packaging

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate environmental and socio-


economic benefits of a biodegradable dairy products
packaging material with a lower environmental impact
through the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
in comparison with current petrol-based food packaging
materials. The biodegradable food packaging material
developed will be Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) that will be
obtained using a process of microbial fermentation from a
by-product (whey) that comes from the cheese industries.

packaging
OBJECTIVE: Development of thermoformed,
biodegradable transparent packages, ideal for
containing fatty foods.

In regard to its potential degradation in compost


conditions, a 90% mass loss over two months was
observed.

BRIGIT
New tailor-made biopolymers produced from
lignocellulosic sugars waste for highly demanding fire-
resistant applications
OBJECTIVE: To develop bio-based composites for high-
tech fire-resistant applications. The use of these
biopolymers in combination with natural fabrics (flax,
hemp,...) will be mainly in the passenger and goods
transport sector (aeronautics, train, buses, shipping,
trucks,..). The new panels will be recyclable, lighter, with
a broad processing windows, high production capacity
and low embodied energy.

NATURTRUCK
New bio-composite from renewable resources with improved
thermal and fire resistance for means of transport

OBJECTIVE: To develop injected plastic parts for the


commercial vehicles industry made with thermoplastic
composite materials from renewable resources (modified
polylactic acid and natural fibres), with improved thermal,
flame retardancy properties and high quality surface
finishing to be used in car internal parts. Those
biocomposites will be a real alternative to low-gloss
standard ABS grades at a competitive cost.

Ecological panels for the aeronautics industry

OBJECTIVE: Development of interior panels for the


aeronautic industry and other means of transport (ships,

walls, ceiling, fairing, and interior compartments of
different vehicles.

More fire-resistant biomaterials for train interiors

OBJECTIVE: Development of new biomaterials for


substituting plastic parts of train interiors that thanks
to the use of flax and hemp as reinforcement of the
plastic material give it more rigidity and resistance.
Moreover, the fire-resistance of the developed pieces
increases.

to stake creeping plants and nets

OBJECTIVE:

To develop a 100% biodegradable plastic fibre to be

Industrial implementation of biodegradable and
compostable nets for packaging

OBJECTIVE: Industrialization of manufacturing process


of four types of biodegradable and compostable nets
for agriculture and marine products, obtained through
extrusion melt-spinning process. Thanks to the
seedling logo they can be distinguished from
conventional nets.

OBJECTIVE:

Development of biodegradable plastic pipes and


drippers for micro-irrigation systems in order to solve

Industrial implementation of a biodegradable and
compostable flat micro-irrigation system for agricultural
applications
OBJECTIVE: To industrialize the process and
technologies related to the fabrication of
biodegradable-compostable micro-irrigation systems
(pipes and drippers) obtained through extrusion and
injection technology, for agriculture crops. The main
applications of the system to be developed in DRIUS
will be crops of small plants such as strawberries and
tomatoes with short periods of farmings, less than a
year.
