MANY POC WOULD SAY THAT THEY ARE
DISENFRANCHISED BY THE SYSTEM:
Santa Ana has the highest school dropout rate among the nation's
large cities, according to a new U.S. Census report that experts
say probably reflects the many immigrants who abandoned their
studies in Mexico.
Experts caution that the results don't reflect the dropout rate
for Santa Ana Unified School District, which serves more than
60,000 students, mostly Hispanics.

QUESTION
How does it affect you
as students to have
teachers that are POC.
Less than 18%(or less in
some areas) of teachers
who serve students in
grades K-12 are POC.
Without question, when the majority of
students in public schools are students of
color and only 18 percent of our teachers are
teachers of color, we have an urgent need to
act. Weve got to understand that all
students benefit from teacher diversity. We
have strong evidence that students of color
benefit from having teachers and leaders
who look like them as role models and also
benefit from the classroom dynamics that
diversity creates. But it is also important for
our white students to see teachers of color in
leadership roles in their classrooms and
communities. The question for the nation is
how do we address this quickly and
thoughtfully?
STUDENT RESPONSE TO THE LACK
OF LATINOS IN EDUCATION
It Paints a picture seems like our people
are not educated or can become educators.
I was disappointed that not enough of us
were in a position of power. We Dont make
the connection.
Its intimidating
Affects our pride. We learn others history
from people who dont look like us or
identify with us. Our history is an elective
seldom offered and not a required.
It sends the message thatMy people
dont do well
I ASKED MY CHICANO STUDENTS THE FOLLOWING
QUESTION.
HOW DOES IT AFFECT YOU AS STUDENTS TO HAVE A
LATINO/A AS YOUR TEACHER?
I feel comfortable and feel like I can trust the
teacher more.
To me when I see a Latino/a teaching me I feel like
we are a part of this country
It makes me feel more comfortable and feel like I
can get closer to them because I relate to them.
They become Role models, gives more value to
who we are.
I definitely feel a lot more comfortable. Not saying
other teachers make me feel uncomfortable, but I
feel more confident
Having a Latino/a teacher gives me the feeling
