    Pulse oximetry is a technology that measures the oxygen level in blood and heart rate using a finger clip sensor.     For people with COPD, asthma, Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) and other

    In patients with COPD,pulseoximetryisusefulinstablepatientswithseveredisease


    (FEV1<50%predicted),andinpatientswithworseningsymptomsorothersignsofan
    acuteexacerbation,asatoolforpatientstouseathometoassistwiththeirmanagement
    underphysicianguidance.Itisimportanttonotethatpulseoximetrycomplements,
    ratherthancompeteswith,spirometryintheassessmentofCOPDpatients.Spirometry
    remainsthegoldstandardfordiagnosingandstagingCOPD,whilepulseoximetry
    providesamethodforrapidassessmentespeciallyofshort-termrespiratorycompromise.
    In patients with asthma,pulseoximetrycomplementspeakflowmetersinassessing
    theseverityofasthmaattacks/exacerbationsandresponsetoatreatment.
    In patients with acute respiratory infection,pulseoximetryisusefulinevaluating
    theseverityoftheillnessand,inconjunctionwithothercriteria,determiningwhether
    andhowtoreferpatientsforfurthertreatment.
    Limitations of Pulse Oxiometer

    Accurateoxygenmeasurementsbyoximetryrequireagoodbloodflowthroughthe
    tissues.Whenyourfingersarecold,thebloodflowisreducedandpoororabnormal
    readingsarepossible.
    Warmingthehandsbyrubbingthemtogetherorwithwarmwaterhelpsimprove
    bloodflow.Also,oximetrydoesnotmeasurethecarbondioxideinyourblood.Inthe
    stateofaseverebreathingattack(i.e.,bronchospasmsuchasinasthmaorCOPD),it
    ispossibletohaveanormaloxygenlevelwithseverecarbondioxidebuildup.
