ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Albert Camus was born on November 7, 1913 in


Mondavi, French Algeria and died on January 4, 1960 in
Burgundy, France

Best known for his political journalism during the 1940s.

He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1957.

At the beginning of World War II, Camus joined


French resistance in order to help liberate Paris from
Nazi occupation.
CHARACTERS

Meursault- The main character and narrator, not caring much


of anything or anyone

Maman- Meursaults mother, died in the beginning of the


book

Marie- Meursaults lover and former co-worker, they met


again on a beach after the day of the funeral for his mother

Raymond- Meursaults neighbor and a pimp, aggressive


towards his mistress and asks Meursaults help
SUMMARY

In the beginning, Meursault goes to his mothers funeral


where he barely shows any morality towards her death.
Afterwards, Meursault finds a woman at the beach
named Marie, and seems to have some affection towards
her but never wants to say he loves her.
A friend of Meursault, Raymond beats his mistress, and
the brother of the mistress wants to get revenge.
While on a beach Raymond gets in a fight with two Arab
guys also one of them being the mistress brother and
gets Raymond gets stabbed, and Meursault later on
shoots one of them.
Meursault is then sent to prison and trialed, he is found
guilty because of his lack of remorse towards his crime
and lack of grief of his mothers death.
LITERARY DEVICES

Symbolism- Sun, heat, and light seem to be an annoyance


to Meursault and possibly mean life is an annoyance

Imagery- When Meursault describes the sky as green it


felt good to him, but when he talks about how bright the
sun or the room is he describes how much he hates it

Tone- Dull and Boring

Repetition- Repetitively saying It doesnt mean


anything and repeating his thoughts of the sun and light
