Direct Quotation:1991- Start of Civil War. Former Army Corporal Foday Sankoh and his Revolutionary United
Front (RUF) begin Campaigning against President Momoh, capturing towns on the border with Liberia.-BBC
Paraphrase: The war began in 1991, after years of unsatisfactory reform. With the smell of the land swiftly
turning sour, it was only a matter of time before the people of Sierra Leone retaliated.
Summary:Sierra Leone has only been an independent country since 1961. With its relatively new
constitution and its leaders generally without organization, the people grew angry over incomplete policies
and a unsatisfactory one party, all people's congress. The land soon slipped into a war amongst itself,
promoting change, including that of a multi-party system. This war, unfortunately, was met with much
destruction, rape, and bloodshed, the most notable of damage done to Freetown, the country's capital.
