Objective
The goal of this experiment is to show how centrifugal force
works. Also showing the concept of centrifugal and how it
applies into real life.
Material
1. Motor
2. Gear
3. Cardboards
4. Ruler
5. Pencil
6. Hot glue
7. Foam Ball
Set up
Introduction
Centrifugal force is related to every part of our life, even without dragging any attention from people
before several centuries ago.
Since the first day that I studied about centrifugal force, the nonexistent force, I started to get
interested in this concept.
Whenever people get pushed to the side when the car turns, the desire of making a product
that clearly and simply shows the concept of how a centrifugal force will appear.
So, as a result of that, this project and its product are fully built on the idea to serve as materials
that shows understanding on centrifugal force.
Discussion of physic
concept
1. Centrifugal force is an apparent force that allow occupant inside a rotating system experience an outward
force.
2. it is not apart of an interaction, but is a result of rotation - with no reaction-force counterpart.
3. Centrifugal force is mainly due to occupants inertia.
4. At the same time, systems having a force inward (centripetal force), occupant inside it still have inertia
thats heading to a previous direction. the opposite direction of the current direction of the system.
5. in order to increase the speed of platform, Friction also take a big part in the construction of this product.
6. the occupant will experience unreal force (centrifugal force)
7. Circular motion also takes a big part in this experiment.
8. This concept controls the amount of centrifugal force. The determine and maximum weight of occupant
that can create enough inertia for effectively showing the concept of centrifugal force. this concept and
Newtons first law are the reliable base of our experiment.
9. Object move along the circumference of a circle, while the inertia of object and things within are
straightforward.
Discussion of design
1. Prepare the materials
2. Cut the cardboards into the circle size
3. Stick the cardboards and the motor together as the main cardboard of the
product
4. Stick the gear with the main cardboard as the platform
5. Put the foam ball on the platform
6. Turn on the switch
7. See the result
DATA
Analysis of data
The data is testing on the time for foam ball to travel to the side of the main
platform; each experiment is based on different distance to the center. The time
cost is the least (6.09 seconds) when the distance to the center is 15 centimeters.
The experiment didnt even work when the distance to the center is 0 centimeter.
Based on the data, the longer distance to the center will need the shorter time of
foam ball to travel to the side of the main platform.
Conclusion
Our final product demonstrate the concept of centrifugal force by using its real life
practice. We used motor, gear, cardboards, ruler, pencil and hot glue to build the
model. It successfully demonstrate the concept while proven a few other concepts in
circular motion, such as the proportional relationship between speed and distance to
the center (based on comparison of each experiment). In summary, the final product,
rolling pan, achieved our initial goals and objectives of this project.
Recommendation
There are two weak points which can be improved in a more professional project,
those weak points didnt affect the experiment a lot though. Friction is the first one, it
affect the force needed by item to travel in same distance. Power of motor is second
weak point, it affect the acceleration on speed of item, which differ the time of item to
reach the essential speed to reach the side. Moreover, if there will be another project
which follow up this one, solve the question about why the item dont move when it stay
at center will be a good objective.
