Schizophrenia

By: Elizabeth Kelly

Intro to schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a disorder that involved the breaking down of
thought, emotion, and behavior. It can affect both men and women
equally but men's symptoms tend to be more severe. Schizophrenia
is generally characterized by:
Inappropriate thoughts and emotions
disorganized and delusional thinking
disturbed perceptions
Positive and negative symptoms
Schizophrenia can have both positive and negative symptoms (this
does not mean that they are good or bad).
Positive symptoms: Inappropriate thoughts and emotions
Negative symptoms: Absence of appropriate thoughts and emotions
Disorganized and Delusional thinking

People who have schizophrenia can have disorganized and

delusional thinking which is often very confusing and
fragmented and people tend to have false beliefs.
Schizophrenia is like ADHD because of the way that people cannot
filter out information and have a breakdown in selective
attention.
Disturbed perceptions

People with schizophrenia tend to have hallucinations

(you perceive something that isn't there).
Inappropriate thoughts and emotions

People who have schizophrenia may have random

impulses that make no sense.
They may also have the flat affect or Catatonia (you
cannot move normally because of your mental
state).
