What is GIS?
A gas insulated substation is an electrical
substation in which the major structures are
contained in a sealed environment with sulfur
hexafluoride gas (SF6) as the insulating
medium. Gas insulated substation originated
in japan where the there a major need to
develop technology that would allow
substation to be made as compact as possible.
Gas insulated substation are used where there is
space for providing the substation is expensive in
large cities and towns. In normal substation the
clearances between the phase to phase and
phase to ground is very large. Due to this, large
space is required for the air insulated substation
(AIS). But the dielectric strength of sf6 gas is
higher than air, the clearances required for the
phase to phase to ground for all equipment are
quite lower. Hence, the overall size of each
equipment and the complete substation is
reduced to about 10% of the AIS.
Advantages of GIS technology
High operational safety
High reliability
Long lifetime
Maintenance free design
Small dimensions
Modular design
Short installation times

BUSBAR
BUSBAR
The busbars distribute the current within the
switchgear . A busbar system is composed of the
individual busbars segments of each feeders
The GIS can be also arranged as single busbar,
double busbar and breaker arrangement
The busbars conductors of each feeder are
mounted on the gastight barrier insulator that
separate the individual feeder.

CIRCUIT BREAKER
CIRCUIT BREAKER
The circuit breaker operates as a single
pressure puffer breaker with two interrupting
chambers for each pole. The main and arcing
contact in the interrupting chamber are
consequently separated from each other. For
short circuit interruption the puffer breaker
utilizes the drive energy together with the arc
to generate the arc quenching gas flow. The
puffer breaking principle is well established
and applied up to highest ratings
