RURAL ENERGY CRISIS

BY: Beau Channing McAndrew III, Quinton Douglas

Graybeal V, Jake Patrick Rubey IV
Problem: Lack of energy in rural areas

About 1.2 billion people dont have access to

electricity
Among the people who do have electricity, most
of it is very poor quality
Problem: Using Renewable Energy in Rural Areas
Rural communities have a higher carbon footprint than they need to and higher,
per person, than their urban communities

Rural communities are forced into choosing high-polluting energy sources, such
as coal, heating oil or wood.

Up to 5 million rural French civilians cannot afford the cost of heating and
lighting, often due to low energy efficiency.
Our Goals
Find a way to create clean electricity using a renewable resource that has to do
with biotechnology

Give that electricity to rural areas

Save the WORLD

Strengthen our acquisition of American currency

The Power of WALKING
Approximately a combined 22,500,000,000 miles walked in a
DAY
We will harness this resource to create electricity
If we can efficiently harness this energy, we can have an
infinite amount of electricity
Our Plan
Design a shoe that harnesses the energy in walking
Get the energy into batteries
Send the batteries to rural areas
How we will do this
There will be a motor in the heel of the shoe, with a lever attached to it that
extends to the balls of the feet

The motor will be stable and still but the lever will have room to move as the foot
makes contact with the ground

The lever will move down when stepped on, and the springs will push it back up

The lever movement will make the shaft on the motor rotate slightly
How we harness energy
When the shaft on the motor rotates, it takes the energy
and turns it into electricity. This electricity will go through
wires into the battery pack to charge up to 8 batteries at
a time.
Other Elements
The motor will be padded and held in place by
rubber and other shoe material so that it isn't
crushed or moving
The wires will be threaded through the shoelaces
so as not to get in the way.
The battery or charge pack will be placed on the
side or the top of the shoe
At utmost efficiency, our shoe will be able to
charge about 13 batteries per mile
If we get this shoe on everybody in the world, we
can create about 292500000000 batteries per
day
This many batteries can provide enough power
for 54,000,000 houses each day
Managing the Batteries
Little Centers or mailboxes over towns for people
to turn in their batteries and get new ones
Reward people for filling up a lot of batteries
Lottery?

the popularity, make aesthetically pleasing
Bill Nye- improve scientific processes and
improve efficiency
Robert Watson- Morale Support
How it relates to
Biotechnology
Using the processes of walking is biotechnology
The energy to walk is created through the
process of cellular respiration
Cellular respiration creates ATP which is energy
This energy is used to walk
Harnessing the energy created through cellular
respiration is Biotechnology
