The oil spill

By Sierra
Fact
The undersea spill at the BP rig in the Gulf of Mexico is now thought to have
spilled up to 39 million gallons of oil.
Fact
On April 20, 2010, an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon Macondo oil well
drilling platform tragically killed 11 workers. It started the biggest marine life threat
in U.S. History. Releasing millions of barrels of oil in the gulf of mexico
Fact
The oil from the Deepwater explosion is also credited with killing off over 150
endangered sea turtles and over 300 Sea Birds.
Fact
An oil spill is the release of a liquid oil into the environment, especially marine
areas, due to human activity, and is a form of pollution. The term is usually
applied to marine oil spills, where oil is released into the ocean or coastal waters,
but spills may also occur on land.
Fact
25.900 marine life get killed because of the oil spill each year. 82,000 birds of 102
species,
6,165 sea turtles, and up to 25,900 marine mammals, including bottlenose
dolphins, spinner dolphins, melon-headed whales and sperm whales.
These animals die because
of oil spills. The oil traps the
animals in the water and
there die because they have
no food.
