What is Hologram?
2
A hologram is an object like any other object in the
real world, with only one difference: instead of being
made of physical matter, a hologram is made entirely
of light.

Holographic objects can be viewed from different

angles and distances, just like physical objects.

Hologram do not offer any physical resistance when

touched or pushed because they dont have any
mass.
3 Technology on which it is based
Hololens uses the technology called
Augmented Reality.
Augmented Reality is a technology that
superimposes a computer generated image on
a users view of the real world , thus providing
a composite view.
4 Augmented Reality v/s Virtual Reality
AR VR

as the digital objects.
5 Introduction to Hololens
Hololens is a pair of augmented reality head-mounted
smartglasses developed and manufactured by
Microsoft. Its one of the first computers running the
Windows Holographic Platform under the Windows 10
operating system.
7 Man Behind Hololens
Hololens is the brainchild of
Alex Kipman , a Microsoft
employee.
He was previously working
on Microsoft Kinnect, also
known as grandfather of
Hololens.
It took 7 years for Mr.
Kipman and his team to
develop Hololens.

Lenses
Sensors
Memory
Speakers
Vent & Buttons
9 Camera

The hololens depth camera has a field of vision that

spans 120 by 120 degree, so it can sense what your
hands are doing even when they are nearly
outstretched.
10 Processor
In addition to a CPU and GPU , HoloLens features a
custom-made Microsoft Holographic Processing Unit
(HPU), a coprocessor manufactured specifically for the
HoloLens by Microsoft.
The main purpose of the HPU is processesing and
integrating data from the sensors, as well as handling
tasks such as spatial mapping , gesture recognition,
and voice and speech recognition.
According to Alex Kipman, the HPU processes
"terabytes of information" from the HoloLens's sensors
from real-time data.
11 Lenses
The lenses of the HoloLens use optical waveguides to
color blue, green, and red across three different layers
each with diffractive features.
A "light engine" above each combiner lens projects
light into the lens, a wavelength which then hits a
diffractive element and is reflected repeatedly along a
layer until it is output to the eye.
12
Sensors

Hololens consists of dozens of sensors that include

accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer,etc
Sensor track where the user is looking and user can
input data by simply gazing at something.
Motion sensor track users movement and adjust the
display.
The sensor can also see users hands, the hands are
an input system: user can interact with whatever he
sees by just touching it virtually.
13 Memory and Power
Apart from its 2 GB RAM, Hololens also has 1 GB HPU
RAM. It also has a flash memory of 64 GB to store
datas like hard drives.
The HoloLens contains an internal rechargeable
battery, with average life rated at 23 hours of active
use, or 2 weeks of standby time. The HoloLens can be
operated while charging.
14 Speakers, Vents & Buttons
On the top edge are two pairs of buttons: display
brightness buttons above the left ear, and volume
buttons above the right ear. Adjacent buttons are
shaped differentlyone concave, one convexso that
the user can distinguish them by touch.
The audio is delivered through speakers so that user
can listen to the real world sounds too.
The device is more powerful than
a laptop but wont overheat- warm
air flows to the sides, where it vents
up and out.
15 Holo Studio
Holo Studio is a design system for building 3D objects
using parts and coloring options displayed in a
photoshop style menu.
The system has some advantages for 3D design,
notably the ability to manipulate and control the
orientation of created objects by changing the position
of your head.
16 Advantages of Hololens
Hololens require no wires, no tethering for its operation.
It is lightweight and adjustable to fit any adult head
size. So, you can work and play comfortably.
It doesnt need any external device like smartphone in
the case of Google glass.
It has its own processor, memory ,etc making it
independent.
Due to presence of HPU, processing the spatial
mapping, gesture recognition is lot easier.
It is easy to use and presence of Windows 10 OS makes
user even more comfortable to use.
17 Applications of Hololens
Remote Instruction Users can get step by step
instructions on things like home repair from an expert.
3D CAD Using the Hololens ro construct and design new
products could be an important commercial use of the device.
Gamification of Tasks Hololens has the potential to turn
the boring tasks into fun. For example Imagine getting on
your treadmill and replacing the world around you with
interesting and interactive scenary as you jog.
Decorating It can be used to visualize how new
decorations would look in your house or apartment.
Learning It can help students to provide better and
detailed knowledge through holographic objects.
18 Gaming The possibilities of using the Hololens for gaming is
fascinating. Think of playing angry birds in your living room.
3D Movies 3D movies can be upgraded to a whole new
level using Hololens. It could help movie makers bring virtual
elements into the space of user.
Entertainment With Hololens you could use a number of
virtual screens of any size, saving you lots of money.
Heads up GPS - You could see instructions and diagrams
laid out on the road in front of you, giving you unambiguous
instructions about where to go next.
Medical Applications Expert surgeons can instruct the
local surgeons to perform critical surgeries. Its application can
extend to battlefield, where detailed medical instructions
could be given to untrained personnel in the midst of combat.
19 Conclusions
Hololens shows a glimpse of the future world, where the
technology of sci-fi movies will come real.
It finds a wide range of applications from education,
entertainment to medical and designing.
It has the potential to replace the display technologies we
presently use.
It can replace the present generation smart phones and
computers.
It can also provide a new angle to high-end gaming which would
be like playing in the world of games as shown in Spy Kids 3D.
It also requires some enhancements like wider viewing angles,
better battery life, compact designs,etc.
Enhancement needs to be done in HPU for better graphics for
generating real like virtual objects.
