AMERICAN FAMILIES
Some Asian cultures embrace the philosophy of Confucianism.
Asian Americans tend to practice values such as respect for
ancestors, filial piety, and avoidance of shame.
Good performance and achievement bring honor to the
family while shame and dishonor are powerful preventives to
unacceptable behavior.
CONFUCIANISM
Confucianism is a way of life
taught by Confucius in China
in the 5th-6th century.
Viewed as a philosophy, and
sometimes a religion, it is best
understood as an all-
encompassing humanism that
is compatible with other forms
of religion.
While it is deeply influenced,
both spiritually and politically in
China, its influence has also
extended to Korea, Japan,
and Vietnam. *cited from ReligionFacts.com

and cultural differences restrict verbal communication.
Asian Americans strive for accomplishments that brings pride
to the family, while European Americans work for individual
acclaim.
