Passive Voice : What is it?
We use the Passive voice when what happens is more
important than who does it.
The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the
passive voice.

ACTIVE VOICE

Street vendors SELL pirated products.

PASSIVE VOICE

Pirated products ARE SOLD by street vendors.


The police caught two thieves yesterday.
We form the Passive voice:
Object + verb Be + Main Verb (By + Subject) + Rest.
(in the Past
same tense Participle
as the
main verb)

Two thieves were caught by the police yesterday.


Martin studies French on weekends.
We form the Passive voice:
Object + verb Be + Main Verb (By + Subject) + Rest.
(in the Past
same tense Participle
as the
main verb)

French is studied by Martin on weekends.


Obama has released a new campaign
recently.
We form the Passive voice:
Object + verb Be + Main Verb (By + Subject) + Rest.
(in the Past
same tense Participle
as the
main verb)

A new campaign has been released by Obama recently.
