WHAT IS PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY ?

Production Making the products

Transformed/Convert raw material into semi-finished
or finished products

Technology - Techniques of conversion

Using different techniques to convert raw material into
semi-finished or finished products.
PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY

A system for scheduling the manufacturing of

products and managing stock inventory that aims to
optimize costs, minimize inventory and maintain a
steady work flow. The modern production technology
that might be used by a manufacturing business can
identify production blockages and sense capacity
constraints, and it does not usually operate at full
capacity.
Production Engineering
Production engineering is a combination of production technology with
management science.

production engineering concepts regarding Design, selection of

material, work study, ergonomics, operation research, manufacturing
management, material management, production planning, etc., play
important roles in efficient production processes. These deal with
integrated design and efficient planning of the entire manufacturing
system, which is becoming increasingly complex with the emergence of
sophisticated production methods and control systems.
Production Techniques/Processes
Production processes can be classified as:-
a) Primary Processes
b) Secondary Processes

a) Primary Processes
Primary Processes convert the raw material available (i.e. mainly
steel, iron or aluminium) into the useful standard shapes or
products.
The main primary processes are
i. Metal Working

ii. Metal Casting

Production Techniques/Processes Cont..

i. Metal Working
Metal Working changes the shape of raw material into finished or
semi-finished product by plastic deformation. It is also known as
chipless forming/machining, metal working includes processes such as
Forging, Rolling, Extrusion, Deep Drawing, Wire Drawing, etc.

ii. Metal Casting

Founding or Casting is the process of producing metal/alloy
component parts of desired shapes by pouring the molten metal/alloy
into a prepared mould (of that shape) and then allowing the metal/alloy
to cool and solidify. The solidified piece of metal/alloy is known as a
CASTING.
Production Techniques/Processes Cont..

b) Secondary Processes
Secondary processing of the workpieces follows their primary
processes.
Primary Processes generally gives an approximate shape and size
to the raw material.
But Secondary process gives an accurate final shape, desired
surface finish and tolerance to the same component which has
already been passed through the primary process.
For example, A sand mould cast component is a primary process
whereas machining the same component on a lathe machine to
obtain the final size and shape is a secondary process.
Production Techniques/Processes Cont..

Examples of Secondary Processes are:

i. Chiseling, Filing.

ii. Turning, shaping, drilling, milling, etc.

iii. Welding, brazing, soldering, riveting, screw fastening, etc.

Some another secondary processes are EDM, AJM, ECG,

ECM, LBM, Laping, Honing, etc.
