Sociopolitics of ESL

Conducive Environment
Cultural Responsiveness
The ability to learn from and relate respectfully to people of your
own culture as well as others' is known as "cultural responsivity."
Being culturally responsive requires openness to the viewpoints,
thoughts, and experiences of others. This is not about changing
others to be more like you. Instead, it is about exploring and
honoring the differences of others. Developing a cultural-
responsive attitude is a must for all teachers to reach the
students.

Empowering Students
In his 1962 address at the University of California at Berkeley,
President John F. Kennedy stated, In this time of turbulence and
change, it is more true than ever that knowledge is power. Most
would agree that, as we begin the 21st century, we are again in a
time of turbulence, and change is happening at an ever-
increasing pace. Because the purpose of education is to provide
children with the knowledge and skillsin other words, the
powerto live healthy, successful lives, power should be the
need that schools most effectively address. Ironically, power is
the need that many students find most difficult to meet in school
Power of Words continues
Teachers language influences students' identities as learners.
Think back to your childhood and recall the voices of your
teachers.
What kinds of words did they use?
What tone of voice?
Recall how you felt around those teachers. Safe and
motivated to learn? Or self-doubting, insecure, even angry?
Teachers words must be seasoned with praise and
encouragement that motivate students

Visuals and Technology
ELLs students need lots of visuals and technology while
learning English language. Technology has had a major
impact on ESL instruction. IPads have helped facilitate
better communication between students and teachers,
programs like iTranslate and Rosetta Stone help students
speak more directly to their teachers, They help in
translating their questions and statements into English and
their instructors replies back into their native language.
