Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition(SCADA)

Introduction

SCADA: Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition

Any software tool that allows access to data remotely from a process and allows the
control of that process.
It is not a control system, but a software tool for monitoring or supervision, which
performs the task of interface between control levels (PLC) and management levels, at
a higher level.
Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition(SCADA)

Goals

SCADA systems are mainly conceived as a monitoring and command tool. Among
the main objectives can be mentioned:
Economy
Accessibility
Maintenance
Ergonomics
Management
Flexibility
Connectivity
Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition(SCADA)
Benefits
SCADA systems are human-machine interface tools and comprise a series of
functions and utilities aimed at establishing the most clear communication
possible between the process and the operator.
Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition(SCADA)
Benefits
Among the features of a tool of this type are:
Monitoring
Supervision
Data acquisition
Display alarms and events
Recording actions or recipes
Data security
Security of access
Numerical programming possibility
Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition(SCADA)

Advantage
The advantages of automated and supervised control systems are as follows:
Creating functional applications without having to be an expert in the field
Under adverse conditions, it provides robustness and reliability to the
controlling system
Easy adaptation and future extensions
Any type of sensor / actuator can be integrated
Availability of diagnostic tools allows you to quickly locate errors
An RTU. It can operate autonomously.
Telemantenimiento.
Automatic generation and distribution of documentation
Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition(SCADA)

Advantage

Rapid system integration thanks to

standard communication systems
Ability to use email and voice
messages.
Web Technology for Internet Access
Security protocols limit access to
unauthorized personnel
Immediate notifications when an
incident is detected.

Environment

ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning): Encompasses the management part:

finance, purchasing, sales, logistics.
MES (Manufacturing Execution System): It includes quality management,
documentation, production management, maintenance and optimization.
CONTROL: Encompasses the entire automation and process control part.

Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition(SCADA)
Architecture of SCADA systems

Basic structure of a supervision and command system.

The transmission of data between the process system and the field elements
(sensors and actuators) is carried out by means of so-called field buses.
The current trend is to encompass communication systems on a common
basis, such as Industrial Ethernet.
Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition(SCADA)
Architecture of SCADA systems
Basic idea of a SCADA system
The functional structure of a data visualization and acquisition system
generally obeys the Master-Slave structure.
The master station communicates with the rest of the slaves, requiring a
series of actions or data.
Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition(SCADA)
Architecture of SCADA systems

A SCADA system is a software application specially designed to work on PCs in

production control
Provides communication between field devices, called RTUs
RTU: Remote Terminal Unit or Remote Units
You can find elements such as stand-alone controllers or programmable
controllers and a control center or Central Unit
MTU: Master Terminal Unit
In the MTU, the process is controlled automatically from the screen of one or
more PCs.
