Kinks in Rails.

If the adjoin rail move slightly out of position, shoulders or kinks are formed. It
may be attributed to

Loose packing of joints.

Defect in cross level at joints.

Uneven wear of rail head.

5
Other Defects in Rails.
Remedies

Correct alignment.

Proper packing at joint.

Periodic maintenance of cross levels, gauge, welding of worn out portions.

6
Other Defects in Rails.
Buckling of Rails.

When track goes out of its original position or alignment due to prevention of
expansion of rails in hot weather. Predominantly it occurs at curves. Following are
the causes,

Expansion gap is insufficient.

Fish plates are bolted so tightly.

Welded rails on weak track.

7
Other Defects in Rails.
Remedies.

Sleeper density and rail sections must be redesigned.

Number of welded rails should not be excessively large.

Lubrication shall be provided on contact surfaces of fish plates and rails.

Proper provision of expansion gap.

Avoiding excessive tightening of fish bolts.
