What is RBI ?
RBI is the central bank of India
The Reserve Bank of India was established on April 1, 1935 in accordance with
the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.
The Central Office of the Reserve Bank was initially established in Calcutta but
was permanently moved to Mumbai in 1937. The Central Office is where the
Governor sits and where policies are formulated.
Though originally privately owned, since nationalization in 1949, the Reserve
Bank is fully owned by the Government of India.

a : one that exercises authority especially over an area or group
b : an official elected or appointed to act as ruler, chief executive,
or nominal head of a political unit
c : a member of a group that controls or directs an institution
Functions of Governor of RBI
Maintaining the financial stability in the economy
Issuing licenses to open new private and foreign banks.
Controlling the interest rates on deposits.
Maintenance of foreign exchange market.
Responsible for leading and supervising primary co-operative banks
which are in more popular terms known as Urban co-operative
banks. He does this through his Urban Banks Department.
Facilitating flow of credit to rural, agricultural and various small scale
industries sectors.

Urjit Patel, is an Indian economist, consultant and banker.
He is 24th Governor of RBI. Before he was the Deputy Governor of
Reserve bank.
Profile :-
Patel obtained his Bachelor's in Economics from the London School of
Economics , M. Phil. degree from Oxford University in 1986. He
received his doctorate in Economics from Yale University in 1990.

1) The financial year of RBI is from 1 July to 30 June.
2) RBI was also the central bank for two other countries. It played the
role of Central Bank of Pakistan till June 1948 and the Central Bank
of Burma ( Myanmar) till April 1947.
