SKITTLES AND TWIZZLERS DIVISION
Today we are going to learn how to do division using skittles and pull apart twizzlers.
First I will give you your pull apart Twizzler. Once you have your Twizzler, please start pulling it
apart. While you are doing that, I will give everyone 18 Skittles.
Ok! Now that our Twizzlers are pulled apart, we are going to use them to learn about division!
THATS RIGHT DIVISION WITH FOOD!
LETS TRY IT!
How many skittles do you have?
Remember the total number you have to partition, or split, into your groups is called the dividend.
Lets make three groups with our Twizzlers.
The number of groups we have in called the divisor.
Now, lets figure out how many skittles we can equally partition among our three groups!
Six! Thats right! Six is called the quotient, or the answer for a division problem!
How would we write this as a division problem?
Can you write this as a multiplication problem?
Do you notice any relationship between the multiplication and division problems? What are they?
How do you know?
12 4 = ?
Then divide by how many groups you have or by how many are in each group.
What is an array?
What does an array show you?
Did you know you can also you an array to help solve
division problems?
Lets Try it!
CREATE AN ARRAY TO SOLVE THE
DIVISION PROBLEM
15 3
The 3,or the divisor, tells me how many rows I need to have in
my array.
The 15, or the dividend, tells how many I should have total in
my array.
Lets try it!
