INTRODUCTION

A hospital is a healthcare institution that provides medical, surgical and nursing

treatments to the sick or injured through specialized staff and equipment.

People are served and taken care of here, when they are mentally and
physically ill .Therefore, it should be a favorable place which ignites hope in
people. Hence, the concept of hospital goes far beyond the conventional idea
of place for treatment of sick. These primarily involve interaction with the
dynamics of a life and death situations and hence should be designed and
planned to provide for this process no matter whatever they are, General
hospitals, multi-specialty or super-specialty ones.

General hospitals are general in the sense that they admit all types of medical
and surgical cases, and they concentrate on patients with acute illnesses
needing relatively short-term care. Each general hospital, however has an
organized medical staff, a professional staff of other health providers (such as
nurses, technicians, dieticians and physiotherapists), and basic diagnostic
equipments. In addition to the essential services related to patient care, and
depending on size and location, it may also have a pharmacy, laboratory,
sophisticated diagnostic services (such as radiology and angiography) ,
physical therapy departments, an obstetrical unit ( a nursery and a delivery unit
), operating rooms, recovery rooms, an outpatient department and an
emergency department.
MOTIVATION

There are times when it seems that we who design hospital are devoid of
imagination and the greatest lack appears to be the organization of the building
plan itself. Words like STANDARDS are thrown at our design too often which is
more often than not a result of the architect following previously evolved solution.
In fact this type of a design problem which has a distinct functional requirements
and on a strict set of technical standards, possess a challenge as to how one
comes to the OPTIMUM BALANCE BETWEEN IMAGINATION AND REASON, BETWEEN
BEAUTY AND UTILITY, and how to satisfy the highly demanding functional
requirements and still create an aesthetical building.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The thesis would aim to comprehend the various functional groups, the
relationship of the interdependent functions and the supporting services, the
desired environment and the type of atmosphere that is conducive for the
patients well-being.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

My scope of projects shall remain confined to the site area of 8 Acres

emarked for the general hospital only.
Will cope with a host of more subjective issues like anxiety of
patients, the stressful work environment of the staff and the needs to
build a sustainable and healing building. To maximum understand its
services part so that would go beyond in its functionality.
To understand all this services are quiet difficult, as have to deal with
inner distribution of services like plumbing system ( Pipeline distribution
in each floor) , Electrical system .., fire-fighting system..,Security
system.. So, whether its challenge to cover up all this services
otherwise comes in limitation.
METHODOLOGY

A hospital is an intense project, driven by services and requires a detailed study

of the traffic its generated and its movements. The requirement of each of its
constituent departments to have an entry and an exit to itself and its own public
and private space, makes a designing of spaces a calculated approach of the
cumulative needs of the user as well as the facilities being provided.
The Hospital would comprise of the following three categories of
accommodation :

Medical Services : Which provide diagnosis and treatment for patients and out patients
and would include OPD clinics, wards, emergency facilities, operating suites, physiotherapy,
etc..
Medical Support Services : Essential for sustaining the medical services and closely
related to them functionally. For example , central sterile supply, pharmacy etc..
General Support Services : Which are responsible for general administration, supply of
food, linen, stores, disposal of waste, maintenance, heating, lighting, power, piped supplies
and mechanical aids.

ABOUT THE SITE STUDY

GENERAL HOSPITAL
SEC-67, BADSHAHPUR,GURGAON, HARYANA

SITE DETAILS :
The proposed site of the government general hospital lies in sec-67 near Ramgarh
on sohna road, Gurgaon.

Sector 67 is a Locality in Gurgaon City in Haryana State, India. It is belongs to

Gurgaon Division.

Sector 68 ( 1 KM ) , Sector 64 ( 1 KM ) , Sector 66 ( 1 KM ) , Badshapur ( 1 KM ) are

the nearby Localities to Sector 67.

Sohna , Faridabad, Delhi are the nearby Cities to Gurgaon

Bestech Park View, Spa Next, Dhumaspur, Esencia , Kadarpur Rd, Ramgarh are
the sub-localities in sector-67.
VALIDITY :

The district of Haryana hardly have any concrete medical facilities at

inexpensive rates and they still look-up to Delhi-NCR. With increasing
population that fuels further demands, the pressure comes on the adjoining
areas to be congest the already stressed urban centres to fulfill the
infrastructural demands.

So due to the limited number of beds at the two hospitals, patients are also
referred to government hospital across NCR. Therefore, there will be another
option soon as the citys third government hospital will be built at badshahpur.

Sector-67 is located near the badshahpur which has proposed site of

government third general hospital. The nearest town being Gurgaon with a
total population of 16.60 lakhs, has only limit for less than 300 beds and face a
major shortage of space to accommodate extra patients hospital beds therefore,
requires more sufficient hospital beds by 2031..

SWOT ANALYSIS

STRENGTH :
Located on near main SOHNA ROAD, It has accessibility.
WEAKNESS :
The plot is rectangular in shape, which shall require efficient planning of
emergency services.
OPPORTUNITIES:
The surrounding areas have malls and housing complexes coming up, hence
footfall in the area shall increase with the time, requiring healthcare facilities.
PROJECT BRIEF :
Ground Coverage 33 %
Floor Area Ratio 150 % (max.)

Basement -
Four Level Basement within the zone area of the hospital site shall be
permissible.
Parking
Adequate parking spaces covered/or open in the basement shall be
provided
The provision of parking spaces shall not be less than one P.C.U for
75Sqm.
Height of the building
There shall be no limit of max. height of the building to be constructed
on the site.
However for building having height of 30m and above, clearance
from airport authority of India shall be required.
DESIGN BRIEF
For Example, the hierarchy of space needs to be like:
THE ENTRANCE, that connects the EMERGENCY WARD,
which further connects the DIAGNOSTIC CENTRE, so
that the patient after being given emergency services
can be referred there. The diagnostic Centre in turn
should be connected to the OPD .
Also theres an interdepartmental relationship
between Operation theatre (OT) and Intensive Care
Unit (ICU) , which cannot be connect to the
emergency ward due to hygiene consideration.Next
comes the activity generated by the patient
according to the stage of care he is at. This leads to
creation of different traffic movement and
department association. If proper understanding of the INTER RELATIONSHIPOF
spaces thus required isnt done, and transition take SPACES :
time, then the patient has chances of catching
infection

The traffic segregation needs to be understood

between :
Patient
Attendant
Services
Medical and Para-medical staff
Create spaces related yet away from each other
Designed according to expressions.
