INTRODUCTION
People are served and taken care of here, when they are mentally and
physically ill .Therefore, it should be a favorable place which ignites hope in
people. Hence, the concept of hospital goes far beyond the conventional idea
of place for treatment of sick. These primarily involve interaction with the
dynamics of a life and death situations and hence should be designed and
planned to provide for this process no matter whatever they are, General
hospitals, multi-specialty or super-specialty ones.
General hospitals are general in the sense that they admit all types of medical
and surgical cases, and they concentrate on patients with acute illnesses
needing relatively short-term care. Each general hospital, however has an
organized medical staff, a professional staff of other health providers (such as
nurses, technicians, dieticians and physiotherapists), and basic diagnostic
equipments. In addition to the essential services related to patient care, and
depending on size and location, it may also have a pharmacy, laboratory,
sophisticated diagnostic services (such as radiology and angiography) ,
physical therapy departments, an obstetrical unit ( a nursery and a delivery unit
), operating rooms, recovery rooms, an outpatient department and an
emergency department.
MOTIVATION
There are times when it seems that we who design hospital are devoid of
imagination and the greatest lack appears to be the organization of the building
plan itself. Words like STANDARDS are thrown at our design too often which is
more often than not a result of the architect following previously evolved solution.
In fact this type of a design problem which has a distinct functional requirements
and on a strict set of technical standards, possess a challenge as to how one
comes to the OPTIMUM BALANCE BETWEEN IMAGINATION AND REASON, BETWEEN
BEAUTY AND UTILITY, and how to satisfy the highly demanding functional
requirements and still create an aesthetical building.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The thesis would aim to comprehend the various functional groups, the
relationship of the interdependent functions and the supporting services, the
desired environment and the type of atmosphere that is conducive for the
patients well-being.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
Medical Services : Which provide diagnosis and treatment for patients and out patients
and would include OPD clinics, wards, emergency facilities, operating suites, physiotherapy,
etc..
Medical Support Services : Essential for sustaining the medical services and closely
related to them functionally. For example , central sterile supply, pharmacy etc..
General Support Services : Which are responsible for general administration, supply of
food, linen, stores, disposal of waste, maintenance, heating, lighting, power, piped supplies
and mechanical aids.

DESIGN BRIEF
For Example, the hierarchy of space needs to be like:
THE ENTRANCE, that connects the EMERGENCY WARD,
which further connects the DIAGNOSTIC CENTRE, so
that the patient after being given emergency services
can be referred there. The diagnostic Centre in turn
should be connected to the OPD .
Also theres an interdepartmental relationship
between Operation theatre (OT) and Intensive Care
Unit (ICU) , which cannot be connect to the
emergency ward due to hygiene consideration.Next
comes the activity generated by the patient
according to the stage of care he is at. This leads to
creation of different traffic movement and
department association. If proper understanding of the INTER RELATIONSHIPOF
spaces thus required isnt done, and transition take SPACES :
time, then the patient has chances of catching
infection
