13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt
loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 You are the light of the world. A town built on a
hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a
lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. I. Salt of the Earth v.13a A. Salt is an important mineral i. Gives flavor ii. Cleansing agent iii. Preserves (as preservatives) e.g. Covenant of Salt ; Numbers 18:19 19 Whatever is set aside from the holy offerings the
Israelites present to the LORD I give to you and your sons
and daughters as your perpetual share. It is an everlasting covenant of salt before the LORD for both you and your offspring. I. Salt of the Earth v.13a B. As Salt of the Earth i. Joy of Christian Life living it out. ii. Sharing Christ as the one who purify (cleanse) us from all our sins. save others by snatching them from fire (Jude 1:23a) iii. Preserving the earth from the corruptions of sin. to others show mercy, mixed with fear -hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh. (Jude 1:23b) _____________________________ iii. God chooses you. iv. You are called for this purpose. I. Salt of the Earth v.13a C. Can salt loses its saltiness? i. It is a hypothetical statement ii. Salt is extremely stable and cannot lose its flavor. iii. Light of the World v.14a A. God is Light i. Psalms 118:27a The Lord is God, He has made his light shine on us. ii. 1 John 2:8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. III. Psalms 119:105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Light of the World v.14a B. It is Visible to all v.14 Seen at a distance it guides Seen close up it illuminates You cant hide a city that is on a hill. You are the light of the world. You=light; world =surroundings
C. It should be Visible to all, at all times v.15
Light is worthless if hidden. You can hide a lamp, but dont (normally) do so. Light of the World v.14a D. Light always shines and it overcomes darkness. v. 16 E. The recipient of Light becomes a light shinning outwardly. Let your light shine in such a way God is glorified. D. Believers are called people of Light. The Difference between Christians and Non-Believers both doing good deeds that the former glorifies God , while the latter glorifies self. Conclusions 1. Christs calling. 2. Christs task to us. 3.
