Palestrinas Mass

Style
Palestrinas dates: 1525-1594. The Council of
Trent occurs between 1545-63 and mandates
that the music of the Catholic Church must
serve the text.

Palestrina wrote 104 masses, mostly in
the six books that span the 40 years from
1554 until his death.

Most of these are paraphrase masses.

They feature contrapuntal,

homophonic, and antiphonal writing.

clarity with which Palestrina treated the text, with this mass he
saved church music.
