Dear Class,
One of the maps in this room has purple pin in it.
Find it and write down the following:
- The country its in.
- That countrys capital.

- The continent its on.
You have 3 minutes. Good Luck.
Earth is divided up into 3 parts:
Atmosphere the air surrounding the planet
Lithosphere solid part of the earth
Hydrosphere water on the surface of the earth
Hydrosphere
3 main bodies of water:
Oceans or seas
Lakes
Rivers
Importance of Water
Why is water so important?
Because we need it to survive!
Its a precious resource: only 3% of the Earths
water is fresh water. The rest is salt water found in
oceans and seas.
Of that 3%, 2.15% is polar ice caps and
underground.
Most cities and civilizations developed around
dependable water sources
The Nile, the Euphrates, the Seine, etc.

Importance of Water
Water is an important means of
transportation.
Cargo ships still move a significant amount
of the worlds goods and resources.
Water transportation is the cheapest way to
move goods.
Importance of Water
Water creates natural boundaries and
barriers for countries.
Rivers like the Rio Grande or Danube
distinguish one country from another

Major Bodies of Water
Oceans
4 Major Oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic
Oceans are a major resource for transportation,
food, energy, boundaries, and SALT!

Rivers
River systems feed into a main river, which usually
flows to the ocean.
Rivers help carry goods and resources in the
interior of a country
Important Bodies of Water
Rivers
Length of long the river and its tributaries are from
its source to the ocean
Discharge how much water it carries to the ocean
to drain.
Drainage Area the land area that is drained by the
river and its tributaries.
Navigability how easy it is for boats to travel on
the river.
Important Bodies of Water
Lakes
Bodies of water fully enclosed by land.
Typically, lakes are fresh water.
Exceptions: Dead Sea, Caspian Sea. These are
depressions, or areas where water goes to the lowest
point and leaves behind minerals as water
evaporates.
These lakes have no outlet to the ocean.
Important Bodies of Water
Seas
Arms of the ocean partially enclosed by land.
Seas can be within other seas, i.e. the Mediterranean
and its seven seas.
Harbors
Shelters areas next to the shore. Important for ports
and shipping goods and resources.
Boston Harbor, New York, etc.
