Warm Up
Time Travel.
Imagine you are an English citizen looking to
immigrate to the New World. Which
section of the colonies would you migrate to
and why? How would you go about setting
up your new life?
Today in History
1664 Dutch governor, Peter Stuyvesant,
surrenders New Amsterdam to the English.
It was then renamed New York in honor
of the kings brother, the Duke of York, who
organized the mission.
Middle Colonies
Highly diverse with settlers from England, the
Netherlands, Germany, France, Finland, Scotland
and Sweden laying claim to various parts.

New York - Began after Henry Hudson discovered the
bay and river while sailing for the Dutch.

The Dutch claimed the area and named it New


Netherlands and
1624 30 families were settled at New Amsterdam.
Governor Peter Minuit purchased the land from the
local Indian tribe called the Manhattans with cloth and
trinkets.

New York - The Dutch settled the area under the
patroon system.
A patroon was someone who transported and
settled 50 families in exchange for land.
These families then had to serve the patroon.
The system failed because tenants could get their
own land without the necessity of serving someone
else.

1664 - James, duke of York, conquered the Dutch.
The Dutch governor, Peter Stuvesant, was
unpopular due to the high taxes he imposed to pay
for Indian wars. When the English attack came, no
one answered his call for help.

New Jersey - Settled by the Swedes and Dutch, but
came under the control of the English with the
defeat of New Amsterdam.
Was 2 separate colonies: East and West Jersey
East Dutch
West Swedes
The two Jerseys were finally united in 1702 as a
royal colony.
Middle Colonies
Pennsylvania - Settled by William Penn who served as one
of the proprietors of West Jersey.
1681 - He was given land from King Charles II as payment for a
debt.

Pennsylvania - Penn wrote a
document called the Frames of
Government that established:
Religious tolerance
Political liberty
Respectful treatment of Natives
Middle Colonies
Delaware - Originally part of Penns land, but
became a separate colony in 1701.
It was settled by the Swedes, who were conquered
by the Dutch, who were in turn conquered by the
English.
Delaware was under the leadership of
Pennsylvanias governor until 1776.
