ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

Algebraic expressions represent

mathematical ideas and operations in a
short way using symbols and variables.
MATHEMATICS EXPRESSIONS
IT USES:
Constants, also called numbers.

variables.

operational symbols
DEFINITIONS
Constant: A symbol in algebra which has a
fixed value, i.e. whose value does not change
is called a constant. For eg. 8, -6, 3.etc.

Variable: A symbol which can be assigned

different numerical values is called a variable.
For eg a, x, y..etc.
COEFFICIENTS IN ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

Numerical Coefficient: Number factor of a

product is the numerical coefficient.

Literal coefficient: Letter factor variable of a

product is the literal coefficient.

45a2b 45 a2b
-7xy -7 Xy
Xy 1 Xy
-p -1 p
LIKE & UNLIKE TERMS
Like Terms: Like terms or similar terms are
those which have same literal factors. For eg.
2b2 and -34b2, 5mn, 0.23mn and -67mn are
like terms.

Unlike Terms: Unlike terms are those which

have different literal factors. For eg. 5a and 2b,
2m2 and 2m are unlike terms.
