INTRODUCTION
Water to be used for drinking purposes must
qualify certain parameters and each of the
parameter must be at a described levels
depending to the nature of the source, some of
these parameters are described as follows:
PARAMETER SIGNIFICANCE TANZANIAN WHO LEVEL IN LEVEL IN
STANDARDS STANDARDS GROUNDWATER SURFACE WATER
Turbidity Direct health effects depend
on the precise composition 5.0-25.0mg/l 5.0-25.0mg/l HIGH LOW
of the
turbidity-causing materials,
The existence of turbidity in
water will affect
its acceptability to
consumers and it will also
affect markedly its utility in
certain industries.
NITRATE source for dressing of the
surface water with Nitrate 10.0-75.0mg/l 50mg/l HIGH LOW
anions (NO3) are
precipitations, which absorb
nitric oxides and convert
them into nitric acid
FLOURIDE Health studies have shown
that the addition of fluoride 1.5-4.0mg/l LOW HIGH
to water 1.5mg/l
supplies in levels above 0.6
mg/l F leads to a reduction
in tooth decay in growing
children and that
the optimum beneficial
effect occurs around 1.0
sewage pollution, Strong 2.0mg/l 2.0mg/l HIGH LOW
smelling colorless gas
manufactured from nitrogen
and hydrogen or from coal
gas. In nature formed by
action of bacteria on protein
and urea.
PH pH is a measure of the
acidity or alkalinity of HIGH
water. As the pH decreases, 6.5-9.2 6.5-8.5 LOW
water becomes more acidic.
As water becomes more
basic, the pH
increases.Acidity weakens
the nervous system by
depriving it of energy, it
makes the physical,mental
and emotion body weak.
HARDNESS to classify waters from
"soft" to "very hard, 500-600 0-75mg/l=soft MORE LESS
Hardness is a natural
characteristic of water
which can
enhance its palatability and
consumer acceptability for
drinking purposes. Health
studies in
several countries in recent
ARSENIC Very toxic to humans, some
arsenical compounds are 0.05mg/l 0.01mg/l HIGH LOW
carcinogens, hence much of
the concern regarding them,
but there are a variety of
other effects on
health. The WHO states
that inorganic arsenic is a
documented human
carcinogen, and that a
relatively high incidence of
skin and possibly other
cancers that increase with
dose and age has
been observed in
populations ingesting water
containing high
concentrations of arsenic

CALCIUM High levels may be

beneficial and waters which 50-100 HIGH LOW
are rich in calcium (and
hence are very hard) are
very palatable.
ALUMINIUM This is one of the common 0.03 mg/l 0.02 mg/l
element which occurs in HIGH LOW
abundantly on the surface of
the earth crust, also used for
water purification process,
removal of colloids since
its a coagulant.

IRON This is also common 0.3mg/l 0.03 mg/l HIGH LOW

parameter occurring
naturally on earths crust,
considering quality of water
for drinking purpose iron
enables development of
bones and teeth.
CONCLUSION
WATER QUALITY FOR DRINKING PURPOSE
SHOULD HAVE THE PARAMETERS SET AT THE
RIGHT QUANTITY SO THAT IT CAN NOT
HARM HUMAN BEINGS AND CAUSE
DEVASTATING RESULTS.
