General Considerations
Components must be compatible.
Components must be compatible with
environment expected.
Inspect all parts for physical damage.
Tag and document all component parts.
Perform transducer verification checks.
Develop a probe orientation plan.
General Considerations
Probe target area.
Surface must have uniform electrical and
magnetic properties and be free from surface
irregularities.
Probe Target material.
Standard proximity transducers are calibrated to
AISI E4140 steel. Positive identification of shaft
material is essential.
General Considerations
Probe target area clearance.
There must be sufficient side clearance and shaft
target size for the probe field to interact with the
target area.
Distance between probes.
There must be sufficient distance between probe
tips to prevent cross coupling on the radiated
fields
Probe Target Area Clearance
Probe Separation
Radial Measurements
Internal Mounting Considerations

Mounting Blocks
Should be located within 2 of shaft to avoid
probe resonances.
Transducers should be mounted within 6 of
bearing to measure shaft motion within the
bearing clearance.
Probe cables and extension leads.
Must be securely fastened down within the
machine.
Internal Mounting Considerations

Probe cables and extension leads.

Cables should exit the machine case below the
half joint but above the oil level with connectors
outside the machine case.
Cables must be sealed when exiting the machine
case to prevent oil leaks.
NEVER use armored cable to exit a machine case.
Always protect the probe/extension lead
connectors.
Internal Probe Mounting
Internal Probe Bracket
External Probe Mounting
Thrust Probe Considerations

Probes must be mounted within 12 of thrust

bearing.
Linear range of probe must be suitable for
monitored range.
Set probes to monitor zero in centre of float
zone.
Expect hot float zone to be bigger than
cold float zone

Keyphasor Installation

Keyphasor provides a once per turn reference

for speed and phase measurement.
A coupling key or key-way is often used.
Probe output should be at least 5 volts with a
duty cycle of less than 50%
Typically the notch should be 7.6mm wide
and 1.5mm deep.
