Story Literary Elements

Some basics that every good story

must have .
Every story needs characters

People

Animals

Or Creatures
The protagonist is the good guy
The antagonist is the bad guy
or force
Great stories have a conflict

Man vs. Man

Man vs. Nature Man vs. Society Man vs. Machine Man vs. Himself
A hint about what will happen
next is called foreshadowing

For example, if you hear this:

Then you know someones about to get eaten!

Flashback- is a return to
an earlier time.
Flash-forward: shifting to a
future time.

Can you name a movie or text that

uses one or both of these
techniques?
The time and place of the story is
the setting
The climax is the most exciting
part!!
The point of view is the
perspective of the story

I was framed! I
just wanted to
That rotten wolf
borrow a cup of
tried to eat us!!!!
sugar!
Point of View-person(s) telling the story or
relating the ideas
1st person point of view (I, we): a character is IN
THE STORY and he/she/it is telling the story.
3rd person point of view (he, she, it, they):
a. Limited omniscient- a narrator NOT IN THE
STORY, who is telling the story. This narrator
knows everything about ONLY 1 character in
the story.
b. Omniscient- a narrator NOT IN THE STORY,
who is telling the story. This narrator knows
everything about ALL of the characters in the
story (A Series of Unfortunate Events)
Theme- what the author is trying
to tell us about the subject of the
story.

What elements in a story can

provide us clues as to what the
theme may be?
Whether youre the reader, or the
