DIFFERENT TYPES

OF ENERGY

MOHAMMED
AHMED RAZA
Sunlight is solar energy.

It forms the major energy source for the plants.

Solar energy is the best source of renewable energy to the

world.

Solar energy is used for solar cooker, solar light, solar

calculator.

Solar cells generates electricity using sunlight.

Solar cell are used for: Calculators, Radios, Electric

Lights, Street Lights, Water Pumping Cars.
Solar water heater.

Solar heat collector.

Solar cooker.

Solar cells.

Solar battery.

Solar power plants.

Solar water heater produces hot water for bathing.

The solar water heater consists of water tank, a

copper coil and storage tank.

The storage tank is connected to the bath room.

Water flows through the copper coil.

The water gets heated and the hot water flows into
the storage tank.
Solar cooker uses solar heat for cooking.

The solar cooker consists of concave mirror, a

black insulated box and a metallic vessel.

The raw foods is kept inside the metallic vessel.

The vessel is kept inside a box covered with glass.

The mirror reflects the light into the box.

Solar cells convert solar heat energy into
electrical energy.

They are also called photo voltaic cells (Pv Cells)

A solar cell is made of thin sheets of

semiconductors like silicon or gallium arsenide or
calcium sulphide or boron.

When the solar rays fall on the cells a potential

difference is generated.
Solar battery is made up of a series of solar cells,
arranged in a compact manner generates
electricity.

It is portable.

It is used in the calculators, watches etc.

Wind is the renewable natural energy resource.

Wind is an inexhaustible source of energy. It is a

perennial source and is available day and night.

It is used to generate electric current.

The blow of wind is allowed to rotate the blades of

windmill. The windmill is coupled to a turbine.

This generates electricity.

The flowing water produces electricity.

So water is a hydropower.

It is a renewable energy resource.

In olden days water wheels were used to generate

mechanical energy to run some mills and machineries.

The water stored in dams is used to rotate the wheels of

the power generators.

The following are the important hydropower projects in

India.
The following are the important hydropower
projects in India:

Narmatha.

Damodar Valley.

Iddiki.

Bharka Nangal.

Nagarjuna Sagar.
IMPACTS:-

The hydroelectric power production creates the following

problems:

Construction of dams leads to the submergence of forests and agricultural

lands.

Silting reduces the life of turbines.

Water transport is prevented when dams are constructed across rivers.

Fishing is a problem.

The dwelling place of tribal people is disturbed.

The tribal people must be resettled in some other places.

The potential energy of the tides is called tidal energy.

The tide is caused by the attraction of the Moon and

the sun.

The rise of sea water level is known as high tide. The

fall of the seat water level called low tide.

The difference in water levels along the sea coast

during high tide and low tide is called tidal range.

The tidal energy is used for producing electricity. A

dam (barrage) is constructed across an estuary.
An estuary is the junction of river and the sea.

It is the place where the river opens into the sea.

In the opening of the dam a turbine is installed.

During high tide sea water flows into the estuary
trough the opening of dam rotating the turbine.

During low tide the estuarine water flows into the sea
rotating the turbine.

The rotation of turbine produces electricity.

ADVANTAGES:-

It is available in plenty.
In-exhaustible
Pollution free.

DIS-ADVANTAGES:-

The tidal range should have a minimum of 8 meters.

Tidal plant destroys the estuarine ecosystem.
It damages the resting places of the water birds.
It interferes with fisheries.
The dam retains the polluted water in the estuary.
The heat energy stored within the earth is called
geothermal energy.

The inner core of the earth has about 4000 C.

This heat is produced by the fissions reactions of the

radioactive elements.

The heat warms up the deep underground water.

The water attains a heat of about 150 C

The hot underground water is also drilled out through

holes or wells.
USES:-

The geothermal energy has the following uses:

The hot fluid with the steam is used to rotate the turbines for the
production of electricity.

It is used for the heating purposes.

It is used for bathing washing and cooking.

The geothermal heat is used to warm up houses during winter season

with the help of geothermal heat pumps.
The energy of an atom nucleus is called unclear energy.
The nuclear energy is obtained from the fission and fusion
of atoms of radio activate elements.

It is also called nuclear power or atomic power.

It is a non-renewable energy.

Nuclear energy is released in the form of enormous heat.

The heat is used to produce steam.

The steam rotates a turbine to generate electricity.
