The Ybanags of Cagayan is one of the early
inhabitants who lived in villages. They engage in agriculture, fishing and hunting as their livelihood. LOCATION: DEMOGRAPHY:
Cagayan has a total population of 895,050, a growth
of 1.56 per annum, and a household population of 176,096 as of 1995 census population, or 99 person per square kilometer, 828,204 Urban population is 198,553 (22.18%) and rural population is 698,497 (77.82%), which comprise an aggregate land area of 9,002.7 square kilometers or 35% of the land area of the country. Cagayan is the second largest province in the region with Tuguegarao as provincial capital, and of Region II It has five provinces namely: Batanes,Cagayan,Isabela,Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES: Agriculture remains the dominant economic activity throughout Cagayan Valley. Seventy-five percent are farmers while 25% are professionals. The area for land production is 6,514.19 square kilometers rice, corn, peanut, beans and other short-term crops for additional income. Livestock products include hogs, carabao, and poultry raising in the backyard for consumption or for sale. Fishing is largely located at the northern tip of Cagayan like Aparri, Buguey, Gonzaga, and Sta Ana where fish is abundant. HOUSING The housing need in the region, which is the annual housing backlog plus the projected yearly new households, is perennially increasing. The prevailing housing programs could not fully satisfy the region's need for decent housing. Hence, the government further enhanced and implemented low-cost housing programs such as the Abot-Kamay Pabahay Program funded pursuant to RA 6846 known as the Social Housing Support Fund Act and the PAG-IBIG Fund, among others. CAR CORDILLERA ADMINISTRATIVE REGION BRIEF HISTORY The Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) of the Philippines is a land-locked region consists of the provinces of Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province and Apayao. Baguio City is the regional center. The Cordillera region encompasses most of the areas within the Cordillera Central mountain range of Luzon, the largest range in the country. Among the six provinces comprising the region,
Benguet (excluding Baguio City) had the biggest population in 2015 with 446 thousand, followed by Abra with 241 thousand, Kalinga with 213 thousand, Ifugao with 203 thousand, and Mountain Province with 155 thousand. Apayao had the smallest population with 119 thousand. Refer to Table 3.
Baguio City, the only highly urbanized city in the
region posted a population of 345 thousand. DEMOGRAPHIC DATA ECONOMIC ACTIVITY Cordillera has abundant mineral reserves. These include metallic ores such as gold, copper, silver, zinc, and non-metallic minerals like sand, gravel and sulfur. Mineral reserves are found in all the provinces. However, mining is concentrated in Benguet. TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Tourist attractions in the region include the world famous Banaue Rice Terraces in the province of Ifugao. This is supposedly considered as the "Eighth Wonder of the World". Natural attractions of the region include the Sumaguing Cave in Sagada and the mummy caves of Benguet and Mt. Province. TOURIST ATTRACTIONS There are four National Parks: Cassamata Hill, Mount Pulag (the second highest mountain in the Philippines with an elevation of 2,922 meters above sea level), Mt. Data and Balbalasang-Balbalan, located in the province of Kalinga. Kalinga is also offering world class white water rafting along the chico river. HOUSING The Cordillera regions priority development agenda focusing on the protection of lands and natural resources and the continuing desire for self-governance are the basic essence of indigenous peoples rights as embodied in the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) : (a) rights to ancestral lands and domains; (b) rights to self governance and empowerment; (c) rights to social justice and human rights; and (d) rights to cultural integrity.
