Today in History 1777 The Battle of Germantown begins when Washingtons troops attach the British early in the morning. By 10am they retreated before heading to their winter quarters at Valley Forge. 1918 the Germans telegraph Wilson to ask for armistice. 1927 Work on Mount Rushmore begins but wouldnt be completed for another 2 years. French & Indian Wars Reasons for the French & Indian Wars: 1. territory 2. fur trade with Natives 3. fishing rights French & Indian Wars The British and French fought 4 wars between 1689 and 1763: 1. King Williams War (1689-1697) 2. Queen Annes War (1702-1713) 3. King Georges War (1744-1748 4. French & Indian War or Seven Years War. French & Indian Wars The first 3 wars began in Europe and spread to the colonies as part of the conflict. The last war began in the American colonies and spread to Europe and India. French & Indian War The French has strong ties with the Native Americans and told them the English would take away their lands. The Native Americans began to attack the English frontier, killing men, women and children. The French were using the Indians to drive English settlers out of what they saw as French territory. French & Indian War Some Native Americans sided with the British, particularly the Iroquois Confederation. They were a fierce tribe of warriors. The French built a fort to help protect the area, which Britain believed to be their territory. French & Indian War George Washington 21 years old, he led the Virginia Rangers into the region in order to command the French to leave. The French refused. Washington and his men marched back to Virginia and suggested that a fort be built to protect British interests. French & Indian War Times George Washington Didnt Die: One of his Indian guides shot at him from a few feet away and missed. On their march back to Virginia, Washington and his men encountered several blizzards and he fell into an icy river and almost drowned (hypothermia, anyone? French & Indian War At Washingtons suggestion, the English built a fort at the Forks of the Ohio River. Before it was completed, the French captured it and named it Fort Duquesne. French & Indian War George Washington and his men marched into the area and surprised a group of French soldiers, killing several and capturing the rest. A larger French force at the Fort pursued Washington, forcing him to build Fort Necessity and eventually surrender. French & Indian War Times George Washington Didnt Die: At Fort Necessity George Washington surrendered (his only military surrender) and the French allow him and his men to march back to Virginia. French & Indian War After Washingtons defeat, he signed a statement that placed blame solely on the British. Because he didnt speak French, he didnt know what he was signing (oops). Britain rejected this and the two countries went to war. French & Indian War The French & Indian War would decide the future of North America by establishing once and for all the supremacy of English tradition and liberty.
