CAREER: PETROLEUM ENGINEER

Job Description:

Overview: Petroleum Engineers extract oil and gas to use for a


countrys energy. They also design new better and more efficient
ways to take out the oil and gas from deposits below the earths
surface.
DUTIES
The job duties of most petroleum engineers is working on the
production of oil and gas. When a new reservoir of oil or gas is
located, petroleum engineers analyze it to determine whether or not
they can use it to make money. If it is profitable, they create a drilling
and extraction plan to pump out the oil or gas with as little cost as possible.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The majority of petroleum engineers work in oil and gas extraction. A
small portion of them provide support activities for mining.
Petroleum engineers spend most of their time in offices or
laboratories, but they also have to work at drilling sites for extended
periods of time.
SALARY
The median wage for an average Petroleum Engineer is about
130,000 a year. A starting salary is around 73,000 per year, and the top ten
percent earn about 187,000 per year.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS AND EDUCATION
What post secondary is required? A bachelors degree. Bcit, UBC, SFU, UNBC,
and UVIC all offer engineering.

English 12 and 11, pre calculus 12 and 11, chemistry 12 and 11, physics 12
and 11, an approved language 11 and a socials studies course 11 all in the
mid to high 80s in percent are needed to get into engineering at UBC the
top engineering school in the province.

Skills needed include: Logical and creative thinking, oral and written
communicative skills, problem solving and strong math skills.
The growth rate of job openings is 10% faster then the average job.

In 2015 there were about 35,000 jobs in petroleum engineering. In 2025 there
will be about an added 3,000 jobs openings.

WOULD I BE SUITED FOR THIS JOB
AND CONSIDER IT A CAREER?

Yes I would because I am good in the required skills and classes needed to
become an engineer, and it would be a good career because of how well it
pays.
