R.H. Whittaker (1969)

Proposed a five kingdom classification. The kingdoms defined
by him were Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia
3.5. THE FIVE KINGDOMS
MONERA KINGDOM: It groups the organisms with unicellular
prokaryotic cells, which sometimes form colonies.
Example Bacteria

Woese (1990)

R.H. Whittaker (1969)

The other four kingdoms have eukaryotic cells,

PROTISTA KINGDOM: It groups unicellular or multicellular
eukaryotic organisms, which never develop real tissue.
Example Algae

3.5. THE FIVE KINGDOMS
FUNGI KINGDOM: It groups unicellular or multicellular eukaryotic
organisms that are heterotrophs and organism decomposers
Examples: moulds and mushrooms

3.5. THE FIVE KINGDOMS
PLANT KINGDOM: It groups multicellular autothroph eukaryotic
organisms that have no locomotion systems. They do not move.
Examples: acacias, mosses, cactuses

R.H. Whittaker (1969)

3.5. THE FIVE KINGDOMS
ANIMAL KINGDOM: It groups multicellular heterotroph
eukaryotic organisms that have specialized tissue and,
generally, a locomotion systems. Examples: squirrels, flies,
sardines
