LAUNCH OF
CHANDRAYAAN-1
 Chandrayaan is
derived from a Sanskrit
word meaning :Moon-
vehicle .
 Reached Moon : 14
November 2008
 The estimated cost for
the project was Rs. 386
crore (US $80 million).
EXCLUSIVE CLUB
India joined an elite club of countries –
 United States Of America
 Russia
 China
 Japan &
 European Union
which have launched Moon missions.
OBJECTIVE
 Three-dimensional atlas of the lunar
surface
 Chemical mapping of entire lunar surface
 Locating minerals in the soil
 Confirming the presence of Water or Ice
 To identify minerals and chemicals on
moon
TRACKING OF ORBIT
 Monitored continuously by the spacecraft
Control Centre of ISRO at Bangalore
 Antennas supports from Indian Deep
Space Network (ISDN) at Byalalu
PAYLOADS
 A communication equipment which is
launched onboard a satellite like
Chandrayaan
 The scientific payload has A total mass
of 90 kg.
 Chandrayaan was containing 11
payloads
 Five Indian and six foreign Payloads.
INDIAN PAYLOADS

1. Moon Impact Probe (MIP)

2. Terrain Mapping Camera (TMC)
3. Hyper spectral imager
4. Lunar laser ranging instrument
5. High energy x-ray payload

MOON IMPACT PROBE (MIP)
 Moon impact probe is an impact probe weighing 34
kg’s developed by ISRO.
 It carried three instruments – a video imaging system,
radar altimeter and mass spectrometer.
 MIP crash landed on lunar surface on 14 November
2008, 20:31 IST near Shackelton Crater at South
Pole.
 MIP placed Indian Flag on lunar surface.
 First Indian built object to reach on Moon.
TERRIAN MAPPING CAMERA
(TMC)
 One of the important payload of India
 Developed by Ahmedabad – based Space
Applications Centre
 It carried high resolution three-dimensional
atlas
 Atlas will help in better understanding of
Moon’s surface

FUTURE MISSION
Chandrayaan – 2
 After the success of chandryaan-1, ISRO is planning to
launch Chandrayaan –2 hoping for further scientific research
in 2012.
 The first edition has bright us tremendous joy and is a matter
of pride for an entire nation.
 The second edition will add to that happiness and pride.
CONCLUSION

The success of Chandrayaan-1, India’s

indigenously developed mission to the moon,
is one that stands high in the our list of
achievements. Hopefully, it will be one that
signals radical change in the manner in which
India is perceived internationally.
CURRENT REPORT

Chandrayaan-1 mission has been terminated, about one

year before the expected end. ISRO failed to restore
the communication link with the spacecraft. It is due to
the malfunction in the computers on-board the
spacecraft. But G. Madhavan Nair putted up a brave
face to say “the mission was a great success and 95%
of its objective was completed including 70,000
images of the Moon”.

IT IS A GREAT SUCCESS
