Sad Mummy influenced by Expressionism and Film Noir? Eleanor Luckett Introduction
Links to film Noir lighting and deep
shadows to frame and emphasise characters and environments. Links to Expressionism through giving characterisation to elements such as the shadows/depressive thoughts literally tapping on his shoulder Use of a combination of books on expressionism, film noir and related animation processes. Main Body Uses highly shadowed, strongly lit environments, much like the use of lighting in film noir. Use of wonky lines in environments and dark spaces to create an uneasy feeling similar to early German expressionism (eg. Cabinet of Dr Caligari and Nosferatu) Dark, dirtier colour pallet links to Egypt but also shows depression/anxiety of character lost abused child syndrome. Damaged protagonist often feature of expressionist films. Main body Use of combination of 3D animation and modelling with hand drawn textures creates a less smooth, less perfect aesthetic; resulting in a more uncomfortable experience for the viewer which can aid in our empathy for Amumu as a character. Conclusion Largely influenced by the visual aspects of Film Noir and Expressionism, using the same tonal values despite using colour. Uses theory behind the movements too decision to not use the typical methods and/or style different to other cinematics Uses style to help tell some of the story Makes this cinematic stand out far more than the others not a style often seen anymore. Has a really unusual aesthetic.
