Worked example pg 95

In a hydraulic brake, a force of 60 N is applied to a

piston with area of 3 cm2.
(a) What is the pressure transmitted throughout the
liquid ?
(b) If the piston at the wheel cylinder has an area of
8 cm2, what is the force exerted on it ?
solution

Force (b) Force

(a) Pr essure
Area = Pressure x Area
= 60 N = 200,000 N m-2 x
3 cm2 0.0008 cm2
= 200 000 N m-2 = 160 N
