ANSWERS
What did the survey show in terms of accessibility?
In terms of accessibility research showed that it is not easy for most students at Rosebank college to gain access to the internet considering the fact that only 34% (12 out of 35) of the
students have internet access at home and only 5 out of the 12 not only have internet access at home but use the internet caf and get help from their close friends and family by the
use of mobile hotspots. Then 11% (4 out of 35)of the students dont have access to the internet at home but receive help from friends and family and go to the internet caf from
time to time. The remaining 54% (19 out of 35) of the students only gain internet access at their school campus .When looking the fact that majority of the leaners only gain access to
the internet at their school campus which can be quite a challenge because students often struggle to find open computers, this goes to show how difficult it is for most students to
gain access to the internet.
Did all students surveyed have access to the Internet outside of campus?
NO, not all students have access to internet outside the school campus, infact only 46% (16 out of 35) of the students have internet access outside their school campus.
If not, why do you think this is the case?
Not all students have friends or family that are willing to share data with them, not all students get enough pocket money that can cover the mobile data costs and some cant even
afford to go to the internet caf.
Did socio-economic factors play a role in your findings
I strongly think that socio economic factors do play a role in my findings as it is quite obvious that different families share different educational levels which then results in different
income levels. With 54% of the students on the survey only gaining access to the internet at school ,the reason is because majority of them simply cannot afford to buy mobile data
which goes back to the socio-economic factor of different income levels ,many of the families get a low income and cant afford to be buying data for their children let alone laptops or
tablets that their children can use to connect to the free wifi at school.Only 34% (12 out of 35) of the students indicated that they have laptops ,17% (6 out of 35) have tablets and
the remaining use the school computers and their cellphones which is then majority of them with parents with a low income or a large family size to take care of.
Did everyone have the same level of skill in using technology?
NO, not everyone had the same level of skills in terms of using technology and accessing the internet. 20 % indicated that they have excellent skills,11% indicated that their skills are
very good, 9% indicated that their skills are good, 23 % indicated that they have average skills and the remaining 37% indicated that they have very poor skills in using technology
and accessing the internet.
Was there a correlation between the level of access available and skills?
YES, there is infact a connection between the level of access and the skills. Many of the students gaining very little access to the internet due to only having internet access at their
school campus indicated that they had a low level of skills and many of the students having internet access at home and other places outside the school campus had excellent and
very god skills in using technology and accessing the internet.
