How many
buttons are
on each hat?
Greetings fellow colleagues and professors! Through this
infographic we will assess our students reading skill of fluency.
To assess fluency in first graders, we will divide the process in 4
steps.
1. Introduction: We will engage students on a small survey on their
likes or dislikes of three words with the same ending sound. (This

Assessing will help them use the correct pronunciation every next time).
2. Rate: We will ask the students to begin reading a passage and
Fluency time them.

Explanation 3. Accuracy: Only count the words read correctly. We can create a
linear graphic so that the student can see how much they have
reached.
4. Expression: Create a rubric that can measure correct
pronunciation, correct punctuation or chunking. For each line of
the passage expressed correctly, you will grant the student a
button for each category.
Finally, you can create three big hats in the classroom.
For each hat, each student will place the buttons they
Assessing got on each category. That way the teacher can measure
Fluency which category needs attention first.
Overall, enjoy the task as a game. As long as we model
Explanation enthusiasm, they will be engage in reading.
Thank you!
