NIDM

NIDM, is a premier institute for training and capacity develop


ment programs for managing natural disasters in India, on a na
tional as well as regional basis. The National Centre of Disaste
r Management (NCDM), constituted under an Act of Parliame
nt in 1995; was redesignated to give the present name of Natio
nal Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) by the Disaster
Management Act 2005 passed by President of India on 9 Janua
ry 2006.
Origin and responsibilities

The United Nations designated the 1990s as the International


Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR). In 1995, the
Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation, nominally responsibl
e for disaster management in India, created the National Centr
e for Disaster Management. When responsibility for disaster m
anagement was transferred to the Ministry of Home Affairs, th
e Centre became the National Institute of Disaster Managemen
t. The Institute was officially inaugurated by the Union Home
Minister[] on 11 August 2004.
