WIND TURBINE

MUHAMMED MUZAMMIL K.V

ROLL NO : 40
EVOLUTION OF WIND TURBINE
Wind is a clean, safe, renewable form of energy.

Use of wind power in sailing vessels appeared in

antiquity

The widespread use of wind power for grinding

grain and pumping water was delayed until

the 7th century in Persia,

the 12th century in England, and
the 15th century in Holland.
EVOLUTION OF WIND TURBINE CONTINUATION
17th century,
Leibniz proposed using windmills and waterwheels together to
pump water from mines in the Harz Mountains.
18th century.
Dutch settlers brought Dutch mills to America
This led to the development of a multiblade wind turbine that
was used to pump water for livestock.
In 1890
Wind turbines were used in Denmark to generate electric
power.
Early in the 20th century
American farms began to use wind turbines to drive electricity
generators for charging storage batteries.
WIND TURBINE
A wind turbine is a rotating machine which converts the
kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy.
WINDMILL : If the mechanical energy is used directly by
machinery, such as a pump or grinding stones.
If the mechanical energy is instead converted to electricity,
the machine is called a wind generator, wind power unit
(WPU), wind energy converter (WEC), or aerogenerator.

TYPES OF WIND MILLS

Multiple blade type

Sail type Horizontal axis windmills

Propeller type
Savonius type
Vertical axis windmills
Darrieus type
MULTIPLE BLADE TYPE
Most widely used.
Horizontal axis.
15 to 20 blades made from metal sheets.
Runs at low speed (60 to 80 r.p.m)
SAIL TYPE
Blades made from Canvas cloth by stiching.
Runs at low speed (60 to 80 r.p.m).
Horizontal axis.
PROPELLER TYPE
Horizontal axis.
Aerodynamically most efficient.
2 or 3 aerofoil blades.
Speed 300 to 400 rpm.
SAVONIUS TYPE
Vertical axis.
Hollow circular cylinder sliced in half. Halves mounted on a vertical shaft with
a gap in between.
Torque Produced : Pressure difference between two slices.
This is efficient.
Larger surface area required.
DARRIEUS TYPE
SHAPE : Egg beater, 2 or 3 blades shaped like aerofoil
Darrieus and Savonius types mounted on vertical axis.
Hence they run independently of direction of wind.
Horz. Axis mills required to face direction of wind to generate
power.
