THE ARMY CREW TEAM

Background

The coach of the Army Crew team for the United States Military
Academy at West Point is Colonel Stas Preczewski (Coach P).
The academy have 2 crews: the Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity
(V).
Each crew consist 8 persons.
Problem: Junior Varsity crew boat frequently beat the Varsity
boat during practice and in some races.
Option: 1. Promote the whole JV team to the Varsity boat?
2. Switch a small number of individual members.
3. Keep the current team members in each boat, but
trying to improve the Varsity team.
The Elements of Success
By U.S Olumpic Committee research to crews coach.

The result of 200 variables research that influence rowing

success can be categorized to 4 elements:
1. Strength and Conditioning Indivual skills : individual
strength and endurance
2. Rowing Technique
3. Psycological Dimensions
4. Program Organization Teamwork : how to
synchronize the all
members

Critiques each other
So, what should to do?

SWITCH THE VARSITY AND JUNIOR VARSITY BOATS?

An extreme option
Past experience at 1990s, other coach made the switch
and both won

SWITCH INDIVIDUAL BOAT MEMBERS

Not found the right combination
JV member want to stay together in JV boat

INTERVENE TO IMPROVE THE VARSITY BOATS

PERFORMANCE
Meeting with the Varsity team to discuss their
performance
Group meeting

Mondays practice ended the JV yet again whipping the

Varsity.
The Varsity members dont regret and look nonchalant with
hollow stares.
In the meeting, the Varsity members wouldnt even sit near
each other and no one talked.
The members are dejected, angry, and clenching their fists.
The eight members walk away from each other and the
meeting ended without solution.
Opinion

Coach P should immediately decide what to do.

Because the competition will be held in four more
days, if this situation continues, so the fastest
solution that can be taken is switch the Varsity to
Junior Varsity boats.
The Varsity members should be given special
attention and lessons in order to become a solid
team again.
